Sorry, Miss. I just think it would've helped if you had made some case for why you thought they should be compared and contrasted besides their stance and dominant hand. Oscar carried his power far better. Had more title fights in twice the amount of weight classes, fought superior competition almost exclusively, had far more durability in every way I can think of, harder to rattle, harder to mark up, had better defense and took less anyway, against the better guys, once again. Both have great jabs... There's a large difference between their body types, Oscar was large framed for most of his career in the weights he fought at, Cotto not so. Oscar had the skill and durability to be a former Super Featherweight who challenged an ATG middleweight for his titles. Can't imagine Cotto doing something similar, frankly. And I like Cotto and think Oscar's a douche but it is what it is. Oscar I think was also more two-handed of a fighter than Cotto is. I do not consider their achievements to be close at all nor think they will be. Not from amateur to their pro finale. But Cotto's got time. However unlike Oscar at that age, it looks like Cotto is toward the end in his late twenties. Also, Oscar unified titles at more than one weight class, was linear champ a time or two. Cotto didn't accomplish this.
:rofl Was just about to post something simliar... and don't forget that Oscar was better looking too. :yep
To be fair: Oscar never faced an opponent with plaster in his handwraps. Yeah yeah, it's not proven, but why the hell wouldn't he chose to use it against an undefeated, unstoppable looking Cotto, instead using it against someone Cotto beat. Cotto was outboxing Margarito, until Margarito's power caught up to him. Margarito literally broke Cotto's face. Who knows how Cotto's career would've played out if Margo didn't beat it out of him that night (likely unfairly). He may still have been undefeated.
Alright, now that I've been forced to contemplate the similarities of these two very different fighters, they do both strike me as guys that tend to lose their identity as fighters here and there and stop doing what they're best at. They do, although I said it already, have great jabs. Elite level jabs. They did both come up working very closely with relatives professionally and fall out with them, and the changing of trainers after hitting it big. Neither seemed to have elite stamina. Pacquiao beat the **** out of them both but I think we can say that's not an uncommon thing for fighters to have in common at this point. They both fought Shane Mosley, though the opponent was a drastically different challenge for both. I don't think Cotto remains on his feet for the version Oscar fought the first time around. ...Both apparently became interested in promoting. But that's also not uncommon for fighters, especially since Oscar was so successful with it. I'll reiterate the water content of their body and that I think they both speak Spanish. Because I'm a smartass.
I really wouldn't know if anybody ever got away with plastering ODLH never to be known, any more than I would know if it happened to Cotto. But, Cotto never showed Oscar's durability level prior to that either, as I see it. For the record though, I do think Margo probably wrapped for Cotto and that the fight damaged him significantly either way.
In all seriousness though, it's not quite fair for the Pac loss to be counted so heavily against Cotto. He lost to probably the greatest fighter of the past 20 years, maybe except for RJJ. When all is said and done, Pac will likely be at least a top 20 ATG. Has Oscar fought someone like that, I don't think so. And this being said, I am NOT a Pac fan, I've cheered against him in every fight. It just is what it is.
