Compare Dempsey and Marciano in these 3 ways

Very good thread topic big guy. I'm going to have a good think about this, I've a feeling this may stir up a hornets nest on here! Lol

 

Rocky has the better chin, Dempsey is a better puncher with better skills.

 

I think both guys had terrific chins and were big punchers.

 

I vote Dempsey in all three categories.Marciano may have had a harder single punch but Dempsey had much more versatile and quicker power.

 

Chin wise more or less the same but give a wafer thin edge to rock. Dempsey had the faster, crisper punch whilst marciano had a more heavy handed bang. But for the quick exciting punching power I go demps. They were both highly skilled and not just mere slugger s. But in that department I've got to go for our Jack. Two great legend s of the game and wish today s heavy s had a fraction of what these two brought to the ring.

 

I also have Dempsey better at all 3.
He was also the better fighter.
Put them in a ring in both there primes and Jack wins that one too!!

1) Depends on what you mean by better puncher. Dempsey had the superior speed and coordination which allowed him to land better punches in combination within a short space of time. Marciano had the better overall power, and was more capable of damaging guys without landing that one perfect shot just by virtue of his sheer bludgeoning strength.

2) Probably Marciano, though Dempsey fought with smaller gloves which might need to be considered. Marciano was never stopped, so that has to be taken into account, although it's pertinent to state that the only time Dempsey was stopped was early in his career when he was still learning the ropes. I'd lean towards Marciano by a whisker.

3) Dempsey had a great style for combating larger heavyweights, and was able to move in and out much better than Marciano could ever dream of. He also had the better head movement and was the more versatile and athletic fighter. Marciano had a terrific style for combating boxers, with his relentless pressure and unorthodox punching angles. Again really depends on what you're looking for. In terms of versatility I'd say it's Dempsey since Marciano was a bit one note, but that one note was played with ferocious passion.

 

When I think of this match up for some reason even though Dempsey is the bigger, stronger, faster guy with as good a chin and power I always think somehow Rocky clips him .. maybe because I feel Marciano overachieved while Dempsey underachieved in my book .. Rocky knew how to keep a cooler head and Jack saw red when hit and that could lead him to losing to Rocky and Louis. To me, a guy with Dempsey's skills should have been # 1 all time under 200 but he did not fight enough past 1919 w quality trainers to take his skills to their peak. Rocky did.

 

Dempsey was better in all three plus faster and not a bleeder.

 

Taking your points in turn:

1) Better puncher - Dempsey was by far the better combination puncher, better technical boxer, and better finisher. Marciano might have had more power in a single punch however, and he had a much better work rate, especially in the latter part of the fight. Dempsey was an outstanding finisher, while Marciano was an outstanding swarming puncher.

2) Better chin - Very hard to say. Neither were stopped anywhere close to their prime, and they both got decked occasionally, but Dempsey seems to have been in trouble more. My instinct is that Marciano had the better chin, but that Dempsey compensated with his recuperative abilities, and ability to fight while out on his feet.

3) Better overall skills - Dempsey was undoubtedly the more skilled and methodical fighter, and he had to be given his style. Dempsey’s style inherently relied on technique, while Marciano's style relied more on conditioning. They were both equally brilliant in their own style, but Dempsey's style was more of a skill based style.

 

Dempsey hit harder.

Dempsey was the far more skilled fighter.

Chin is difficult to say. Both had great chins. Both tough as nails.
