Both are long-reigning champions in eras which considered as weak. Who had the better opposition in title fights? Lets try to compare in chronological order.

Ken Norton - Chris Byrd - Norton would've stopped that version of Byrd IMO.

Alfredo Evangelista - Calvin Brock - Brock by decision

Ossie Ocasio - Ray Austin - I think Ocasio wins by razor-thin decision

Mike Weaver - Lamon Brewster - I'd favor Weaver against shot Brewster, by late stoppage.

Earnie Shavers - Sultan Ibragimov - either Shavers stops him or Sultan wins by close decision.

Lorenzo Zanon - Tony Thompson - Thompson by TKO late.

Leroy Jones - Hasim Rahman - Jones is criticised much, but he beats this shot version of Rahman.

Scott LeDoux - Ruslan Chagaev - Chagaev wins by wide margin or TKO.

Muhammad Ali - Eddie Chambers - Chambers edges totally shot Ali by 1-2 points

Trevor Berbick - Samuel Peter - Berbick wins by points

Leon Spinks - David Haye - Haye by mid-rds KO

Renaldo Snipes - Jean Marc Mormeck - Snipes by KO

Gerry Cooney - Tony Thompson II - Cooney by decision

Randall Cobb - Mariusz Wach - nice battle between two iron chinned, but limited fighters. Both could take enormous punishment. Can't pick the winner.

Lucien Rodriguez - Francesco Pianeta - Pianeta by decision.

Tim Witherspoon - Alexander Povetkin - Witherspoon wins TKO11.

Scott Frank - Alex Leapai - Scott Frank by wide decision. As weak as he was, Frank still was way better than Kavin Johnson's victim Leapai.

So overall it's 9-6 in Homes' favor and 2 more fights too hard to call for me (Shavers - Ibragimov and Kobb - Wach).

Seems like a reasonably well balanced comparison.

Don't agree here. Povetkin-Witherspoon is a very close fight.

Povetkin was out of shape for that one. Don't forget, your boy witherspoon showed up to the ring on more than one occasion looking like the philsbury doughboy.

Witherspoon vs Povetkin at their best. Povetkin is an oustanding combination puncher, while witherspoon is very slick.

I think Povetkin takes a green Witherspoon.

I also think Byrd takes an old Norton.

I don't know if I agree with either of those. Even a 15 fight Witherspoon gave Holmes absolute fits and fought back from a broken jaw to beat Renaldo Snipes. And that 35 year old Ken Norton gave a peak Holmes all he could handle too, as well as taking Jimmy Young.

That was an old past prime Byrd, too. Just 1 fight earlier Norton won vs Jimmy Young, slick and fast boxer. Norton lost razor-thin to Holmes. I see him beating this Byrd for sure.

Could Thompson take the Cooney left hook and stay standing?

    Yep

Price hits a lot harder than one hand cooney

Also Thompson is very wily and would see the one handed fighter and make sure to circle away all night and win easy

I think Sultan decisions or knocks out old Shavers. He did evade old Holyfield and old Briggs with that negative Mayweather style. He also had fast hands and could counter aggressive fighters well enough.

Did he really beat Snipes? I wasn't so sure. I know he didn't beat Pinkie. I think the Holmes performance had more to do with Larry's decline. I would definitely pick a prepared Povetkin over Witherspoon.

I've never understood the awe some have at the Norton of the Holmes fight. He was getting bombed out by an equally shot Shavers just a few months later. The rest of his career was a steep decline.... the sort of decline which makes you look backwards to find it's beginning.

nice picks but here is my spin

Ken Norton - Chris Byrd - Norton would've stopped that version of Byrd IMO.

I go with Byrd over the older Norton in an ugly decision

Alfredo Evangelista - Calvin Brock - Brock by decision

I go with Brock by stoppage or UD

Ossie Ocasio - Ray Austin - I think Ocasio wins by razor-thin decision

    Austin beats up Ocasio RSC

Mike Weaver - Lamon Brewster - I'd favor Weaver against shot Brewster, by late stoppage.

Weaver KO's Brewster in a good action- trading fight

Earnie Shavers - Sultan Ibragimov - either Shavers stops him or Sultan wins by close decision.

I like Sultan in this one by UD or RSC but Earnie always had a shot I just think Sultan was a decent defensive fighter

Lorenzo Zanon - Tony Thompson - Thompson by TKO late.

    Thompson by ownage

Leroy Jones - Hasim Rahman - Jones is criticised much, but he beats this shot version of Rahman.

I know Leroy too well to pick him over any version of Rahman

Scott LeDoux - Ruslan Chagaev - Chagaev wins by wide margin or TKO.

    on the $$$

Muhammad Ali - Eddie Chambers - Chambers edges totally shot Ali by 1-2 points

Chambers target practice Ref may have to stop it

Trevor Berbick - Samuel Peter - Berbick wins by points

I like wide Sam here by a close decision or RSC- the Sam of fight one by stop

Leon Spinks - David Haye - Haye by mid-rds KO

    Haye takes him out early

Renaldo Snipes - Jean Marc Mormeck - Snipes by KO

    $$$$

Gerry Cooney - Tony Thompson II - Cooney by decision

Cooney by early body shot KO or Thompson by late TKO

Randall Cobb - Mariusz Wach - nice battle between two iron chinned, but limited fighters. Both could take enormous punishment. Can't pick the winner.

Wach was solid and could box a bit, Cobb was tough as they come but got hit too much and could not really bang....I like Wach on points

Lucien Rodriguez - Francesco Pianeta - Pianeta by decision.

Pianteta might stop him or UD

Tim Witherspoon - Alexander Povetkin - Witherspoon wins TKO11.

This is a tough pick but I like Povetkin work rate and conditioning UD AP

Scott Frank - Alex Leapai - Scott Frank by wide decision. As weak as he was, Frank still was way better than Kavin Johnson's victim Leapai.

Frank was a nice guy and could fight a bit but not sure how he takes Leapai's power (Boystov) if it goes the distance may be a sloppy close fight but I may go with AL based of Boystov win...Frank would have to fight he was not a boxer but i can not be certain here

Bummy, don't know about Rahman from 2008 vs Jones. But 2012-2014 version of Rahman loses to every HW title challenger in history, for sure:yep

Can't see 2006 Byrd beating Norton. Byrd was past his best, 36 years old, and his speed and reflexes declined.

Also, Frank beats Leapai. Leapai beat who? Can trasher Boytsov. Leapai was outboxed by past prime Colin Wilson :think and KO'd by Kevin Johnson. Even Frank was too good for Leapai.
