Just watched Listen v Machen in colour and his shots didn`t seem that hard despite some of the great KO`s he scored in his fights, it was more of a heavyhanded thudding power compared to Holy v Stewart which I rewatched where Holy often hurt Stewart with snapping shots and seemed to be putting more into his shots than Liston did and that includes his jab, does Holy`s power compare favourably to Liston`s despite Holy scoring less one punch KO`s throughout his career?
Yep, Holyfield could punch fairly well, he had those fast hands when he was younger. But not the same sort of cracking power that liston carried. If you remember in the actual Stewart fights, Holyfield never really kod him despite hitting him fast and regular. But such as Tyson and Moorer did better. I also don't see Holyfield stopping Floyd in the first either.
Holyfield isn't as powerful as Liston. Liston was one of the hardest punchers in history. He was a natural heavyweight ... a very broad man with long muscle bound arms and massive fists. He had one punch KO power, something Holyfield never had at heavyweight. Holyfield scored his knockouts via accumulation of punches and through combinations. He isn't a natural heavyweight and utilized exogenous substances to increase his muscle mass and strength, pushing himself into the heavyweight category. We've seen plenty of boxers take Holyfields punch volume and survive. Holyfield did have a handspeed advantage over Liston but he doesn't hit harder.
Foreman sparred with Liston and fought a prime Holyfield Foreman ranked Liston, Lyle, Cooney and Williams as the 4 hardest punchers he faced. Holy wasn't mentioned. While Foreman does say stupid things on occasion, i will take his word here.
I know it`s an odd thread but not all of Liston`s shots were that hard, a lot Holy`s shots v Stewart were cleaner and had more snap in them than Liston`s often did.
Fair enough but by the time Holy fought his rematch v Stewart he seemed to have more on his shots and had bulked up.
Liston was a slow puncher but a heavy handed one. Kind of like GGG or Beterbiev, guys who are not especially quick handed but who land hard thudding shots.
I compare Holy's punch to Ray Mercer, both continual, accumulation punchers who could eventually knock down or out someone with 1 shot, but rarely.
Liston pretty clearly sheathed his arching power punches after losing the first two rounds. Goes for scoring shots after that, he's not really trying to knock Eddie out again until very late I don't think.
Holyfield’s power came from his speed and good technique. In terms of raw power it’s not even comparable to Liston’s at all
Unlike many here I do like you're zest for fresh posts but this one is silly .. Liston was a murderous puncher with either hand ... a far harder punch than Evander ..
