whoa whoa, no one said duck, ESPECIALLY in terms of lewis. the question i'm looking at is: who could jones have fought to give him an all time great resume? mcclellan never would have happened cause they were friends, calzaghe was no one at any time jones could have fought him, DM would have happened had he been willing to travel (and no, jones shouldn't have had to travel to fight him) and lewis would have been possibly the greatest win in boxing history if he could have pulled it off. not claiming it's jones fault they didn't happen, or even that they all should have, but you can't deny the effect they would have had on his resume
friends mean nothing if you really want to fight.....its business simon brown and maurice blocker were almost considered best friends and they went to war ........
damn straight but jones and mclellan were both knockout artists and that was the reason given; i wouldn't want to watch it as I see it going more like rahman/barrett...
I listen to interviews with Roy regarding the McClelan fight .I heard they fought as ametuers ,There was interest there the fact that they were friends was the reason they were opened to the possibility .But hey we will never know . I will blamed both sides for the DM fight ..I don't hear anyone ever say DM ducked Jones becasuse he never chose to come hear .Its always Jones I beleive both of them are at fault .I do agree though any of those fights would of enhanced his resumes .. This is why these guys were all great champions but its always comical when 1 side is always blamed and never the other .And still even if you takeaway those names tell me who from 160 to 175 during the 90's really had a shot at beating him ?How could that happen if he really didn't test him self ?
exactly. i don't think he WOULD'VE tested himself but it would have been nice to see some of these fights. i have him outboxing benn and collins, knocking out jackson at 160, don't know enough about DM to comment, mcclellan had a chance in the first 3 rounds otherwise, wide UD win for jones, and lewis...well, jones would have gotten knocked out but his stock goes through the roof for the effort. at 168 no fighter that has ever competed in that division could have beaten him at 175, no fighter that competed during his time would have beaten him
Id have to agree with this statement. Tru jones looked way better in the ring but i think they still fought the same caliber of fighters so the should be ranked close. N pleas take tarver off roy's list of people he beat, he clearly lost the first fight against tarver they just gave it to roy.
Also lets not foregt Roy was already at SMW by the time McClellan moved up to fight Benn. How can he be ducking a fighter who's schedule was full by taking on one of the best P4P fighters in the world in James Toney? Thats one hell of a duck by Roy ! And the Lennox fight come on bro the size alone would rediculous ..Plus it would of taken a whole lot of $$$ to get that done ..
yeah i know...but that was the weakest excuse i have ever heard...im not sure how they were even friends..i knew they knew each other from amateurs...but "friends"? mcclellan and julian jackson were ko artists too...and those had great action and endings
7-5 for jones at worst and that's looking for tarver rounds if you are antonio tarver or mcgirt, you might score it a draw even then, they probably need a few beers to find that score
totally agree but no one is using the word duck. just pointing out guys that would've improved his resume toney is his best win and the only fight in which he was the underdog and he completely dominated and the size alone WOULD be ridiculous which is why, win or lose, he'd get respect. did he duck lewis? **** no. but he did pick the heavy he could beat. are you saying fighting ruiz is the same? of course not. if he had picked lewis, not the smartest decision, that win would go down as possibly the greatest of all time
I believe if jones won the fights against tarver, glen, and green then it coulda been debatable to be at the top 10.
damn right but from all roy has said and done for mclellan since leads me to believe he genuinely cares about him you're right though: it's an excuse. which is why i think he still should have fought him. that would have bumped his resume up a bit at 168.
Yo ima a roy fan all day im even from pensacola fl and meet him plenty of times but he didnt win that fight. Did you see it?
i'm currently debating the classic roy being in the top 10 anyway:good those wins would've help but the lewis win...****, he woulda been a lock
