Of course they did. But Ruiz was part of Don Kings stable and the BS decisions and favoritism that he received from refs are widely documented. Ruiz was not even remotely close to a top level HW when the ref and judges actually did their job.

 

Ruiz was not a top 5 HW ever. And who knows? The only two former middleweights he faced beat him fairly comfortably.

All 3 Holyfield fights, Kirk Johnson(faking and exaggerating low blows to try and draw out a DQ) and he was KO'd inside 20 seconds by Tua. Pretty sure the Thunder fight was controversial too. Total joke of a fighter.

 

so any close fight, got it. For someone who sucks so baldy, seems Ruiz should have been outpointed very widely by anyone decent, therefore negating any type of close score controversy. Look, I know Ruiz is easy to hate. He just wasn't easy to beat.

 

There's an asterisk next to every major win he had. He greatly benefited from lying, cheating and generous judging all thanks to Don Kings influence. So yeah Ruiz sucked and that's further evidenced by Jones' "historical" achievement easily being replicated by a fat blown up Toney.

Top 5 HW at the time? Possibly. Certainly top 10. And, again, if a former MW beating a heavyweight contender was that easy more people would have done it.

Yep. Rahman was good enough to KO the HW champ, but apparently NO good enough to Beat the worst HW titlist in Ruiz. And Oquendo? Hell, he was clearly outboxing Tua before getting KO'd. Yet he was beaten by the a HW anyone can beat?

Even Golota was skilled enough to have beaten some lowly scrub like Ruiz. Yet....

Some people just can't give credit to boxers they hate on. I HATED watching Ruiz fight. But dude found ways to win.

 

So limited that Holyfield could barely beat him. Look up 'Imposing your will" or "ring generalship" when it comes to scoring if you must.

Most fighters including very good ones are not in the kind of position Jones was where they are allowed to pick and choose fights like that. We don't know how many former Middleweights could have replicated that feat. We do however know that Ruiz lost twice decisively to former Middleweights and is the only HW of the modern era that has happened to. That speaks volumes.

 

Ruiz wasn't allowed the fight the way he normally does against Jones. Even he himself admitted this. He was a very limited fighter when the ref actually enforced the rules.
