About forty or fifty years ago, many of the fighters who had real weight issues often neglected their training and diets. I remember well when I read and heard about Bobby Chacon having a real problem making weight for a bout with Ruben Olivares with Chacon's WBC world featherweight title at stake at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California. The bout drew a sellout crowd of 18,700 and a record gate for a world title bout in California of $421,000. For the bout, Bobby reportedly received a purse of about $160,000., an enormous sum of money for a non-heavyweight champion to receive for one bout in California at the time.

A weakened Chacon was stopped in the second round of the bout. Afterwards, Chacon was raked over the coals by the media, boxing people and fans, especially when it was learned that Chacon had not been training and watching his diet in a faithful manner. After that debacle, I remember reading the "powers-that-be" were checking Chacon's weight periodically shortly before he had a scheduled bout.
