Rocky did fight great fighters. I posted a poll in another thread and the vote was 6 to 1 in favor of Archie Moore and Jersey Joe Walcott still being great fighters in 1952 and 1955 when Rocky beat them.

He may not have beat any all time great punchers, but he beat great fighters.

People need to face facts, its simple maths.....Mike Tyson fought bigger, and harder hitting punches than Rocky Marciano ever did..!!! and Mike Tyson beat bigger and harder punches than Rocky Marciano....!!!

    This thread is ****ing stupid.

Facts are Rocky Marciano, with his flat footed...slow...but yes consistent style.

Would be a deadman at Heavyweight, during the 80's and 90's in my opinion.

    Razor Ruddock
    Lennox Lewis
    Evander Holyfield
    Buster Douglas
    Bone Crusher Smith
    Tony Tubbs
    Trevor Berbick

Basically i could go on and on.

Its simple Maths, these guys all hit harder than a bunch of crusierweights, these guys where bigger and stronger. Lennox Lewis had to hit Mike Tyson with everything, and also broke his hand in the proccesss. But still Mike Tyson looked as if it was fatigued stopping him from getting up off the canvas.

No one here is debating this. What we are debating is your claims of Trevor Berbick, Tony Tubbs, Evander Holyfield and Buster Douglas hitting harder than Rocky Marciano.

Douglas Holyfield and Lewis knocked him out so they are neither here not there. You dont get any chin credits for being stopped by a big puncher.

Smith landed two clean punches on him on the course of the fight.

Now here is the bit that you might strugle with.

Being bigger does not necisarily make you a harder puncher or more durable.

Primo Carnera was bigger than anybody Tyson ever fought yet he did not hit as hard as Bob Satterfield or have as strong a chin as Paulino Uzcdun.

Now here is the second part that you might struggle with.

Being a harder puncher does not make you a better chin checker.

Tyson does get credit because he took an ass whipping for many rounds before being stopped. We are talking about clean shot after clean shot and he took it until he was exhausted.
You hit someone enough times, wear them out, even the guy with the best chin can be taken out.

Take for example the Margarito vs. Mosley fight not to long ago. Margarito has a very solid chin, yet Mosley kept hitting him one after the other with clean shots and Margarito eventually wore down and got taken out.

Also remember the shape of a fighter, both mentally and physically, can change things. For Lewis, he was a shot fighter. For Holyfield, we are talking about someone trying to get in some type of shape both mentally and physically after spending 3 years in prison. Physically, for the first fight, he still wasn't in proper shape. His physical trainer noted that, Tyson noted that, and even Holyfield thought he didn't look quite prepared compared to the second fight. Second fight he was physically fit but it doesn't matter when mentally you are still messed up. Technically of course, forget it. Never the same after Rooney left.

Being bigger does help in some ways. Bigger bodies can usually take a better pounding. Ever notice why there are fewer KO's by body-shots as the fighters get bigger?
Same with sparring. There are some guys that look out of shape but they are just so big they can take it.
When was the last time you saw a top 10, 200+ pound HW, get KO'd by a body-shot?

Big Guys can also use their weight to their advantage.

Marciano's power: It was big but he was also someone that pounded you into the ground.

Some smaller guys hit harder than some bigger guys.

You have to look at the manner in which Mike Tyson fought, when he was hit or hurt. He kept on fighting, he never hung on for dear life. Because his natural instincts where to fight, Mike Tyson was very primal in that sense. Sugar Ray Leonard once said it, before one of Mike Tyson's fights.

Mike Tyson's instincts are to fight.

That is why Mike Tyson went down fighting in a wall of flames, against ever single fighter he lost to.

Its a myth that he had no heart, never once did Buster Douglas see defeat in Mike Tyson's eye's, nether did Evander Holyfield.

At the end of round 10 during Holyfield vs Tyson I, Mike Tyson took a ridiculous amount of punches from Evander Holyfield.

Mike Tyson out on his feet, came out for the 11th round..........and attacked.

Because those where his natural instincts, just like a Lion and Tiger in the wild. I watched a very upsetting and disturbing video, of a male Lion being killed by two other Lions. It was posted in the lounge, i could not bare to watch the whole video, there where many parts to the video.

But the Lion being slowly killed, never gave up, never stopped fighting.

You have to admire and respect that, its life and death with fighters like Mike Tyson. And also Rocky Marciano, i'm getting abit emotional writing this part......

Mike Tyson had that primal instinct to fight.
