Hi, apologies if this has been asked before but if it has, I imagine the situation is slightly different. My eyesight is -8.50 in my right eye and -9.00 in my left - pretty awful. I have been training for around 4 months now and am starting to spar, my overall goal is to compete. I have read a great deal of conflicting information - I currently spar with contact lenses in (even with my defence which is currently quite poor, I have generally only been losing lenses when I'm gassed towards the end of the round against someone with better cardio than me). I intend to see how it is to spar with neither lense in - obviously I can see contrast but everything is pretty heavily blurred. Anyway, what is the possibility of me actually being able to compete? As far as I am aware at this point even if I get laser eye surgery I'd still be short sighted, and I wouldn't have the cash to do that for a while. Thanks.
the doctor doesnt check for contacts. Well ive never seen one check. Pro's are allowed and AIBA allows it so im sure the ABA would. soft lenses can't scratch or damage your eyes. Just don't expect the ref to stop it so you can look for ur contacts then continue.
To give you some idea, 20/80 vision is equal to -2.00. 20/500 vision is equal to -6.00 vision - the chart I found only goes that far. So yeah, it is rather bad.
You wont get permission, Short Sighted, and Boxing dont mix. Theres a Danger of Epilepsy, its a No No.
I know USA boxing allows you to compete using contacts, I wear glasses, but don't wear contacts during competition. I am also not extremely short sighted. I also know in USA boxing if you lose a contact they don't stop the contest in order for you to find it.
Cheers for the replies. Looks like I'll be doing eye exercises and saving up for corrective surgery for a few months then!
Don't get corrective surgery, look up about ortho K contact lenses, you be able to fight without a doubt if you use them, you put them in at night and take the them out in the morning and can see 20/20 without the lenses being in your eyes, its the best option for the long term health of your eyes, corrective surgery is not a good idea.
