I know, it's pretty dumb, but I'm just interested in people's opinions. After all, I think these two are easilly the best 2 fighters since the 90s p4p. So if these two were SOMEHOW the same weight and had the same skill at their best weight, which style/fighter would win? I think most people have Whitaker higher on an all-time list, though this doesn't neccessarily mean that he would have beaten Jones (once again, IF he was SOMEHOW the same weight with the same skill). So let's have it.
If they were the same size and weight, I'll go against the grain and take Whitaker, even though most consider Roy unbeatable in these scenarios. But think about this, when faced with an unorthodox slickster in Montell Griffin, look how much trouble Jones had before catching him in the 9th I believe it was. Griffin ain't half what Pea was. As good as Jones is, this is not one of those fights where he's going to be slipping punches and countering with ease, this is one where he'll be caught by jabs, caught with slippery inside punches, caught by counters himself at times, etc. Pea won't have a field day, but I think his more aggressive jabbing style will dictate the fight much the way Griffin did in their encounter. Close affair this would be. Now bring it on.
Well, it is a P4P matchup. Head to head as they were Jones stops him, but if they were the same size it's another story.
Jones UD. Close though, the Griffin I fight should not be a measure. Anybody can have an off night. When Roy was motivated and angry he destroyed Griffin like he was nothing. Jones's athletisicm and lead right hand lets him make contact with Pea more than any fighter p4p could in the history of boxing.
That was also after Griffin's people had fired the greatest trainer and fight plan master of all time Eddie Futch, who was responsible for Griffin's success in the first fight. He was also Ali's nightmare, as his guys always gave Ali hell. One of the best analysts of styles and gameplans of all time. Take him out of the equation and you have just as bad a problem as a "motivated Jones". I don't know why he wouldn't be in the first place, though he definitely came out in the rematch looking to end it fast.
As I said I would not use either fight as a measure of how this one would go. The Toney fight is not that bad of an indicator, in terms of how Jones deals with great defence. However, Pea has a much more varied defence and it would be nowhere near as easy to crack. Plus there will be a 1000 punches being thrown back at him. I just see Roy being able to beat Pea to the punch more often than he would be landed on, Pea's jab and workrate would be major issues for Roy but I see his handspeed, footspeed and lead right would wining a close fought descsion.
IMO, if you're going to use examples of either fighter, the sample should NOT be taken from LHW Jones Jr or WW Whitaker. Not their best weights.
It's 8-4 as of now (cause Sues vote was meant to be for Whitaker). Still haven't made up my mind yet, I'll need think about it a bit more (hence why I asked). Agree that it should be a p4p match-up between a SMW Jones and a LW Whitaker.
