Well i like Dempsey's skills in terms of comination punching, really had some skills in that department, and a good bit of speed as well. Great finisher also, not sure about the complete package though.
For his time, Joe Gans was pretty complete, although he tended to rely more upon one or two punches, rather than throw in combination.
i find it too difficult to rate a definite number 1 but all the names i would say are already out there but what about Benny Lynch anyone?
Ortiz is a great mention. One of my favorite fighters. About as well-schooled and well-versed a fighter as they come.
Sugar Ray Leonard had absolutely everything, fluidity, every shot in the book, great heart, great chin, great stamina, durable, flashy and a beautiful boxer .. There are many others who are also brilliant but i would say in my lifetime that Ray Leonard and Duran are the 2 most complete fighters ive seen .. The Duran performance against Leonard in Montreal is absolutely amazing .. Alot of people seemingly dislike Leonard for his business acumen and the way he was outside the ring but if you judge him on his ring performances alone, he was easy the best and most complete fighter of the last 30 years ..
Brilliant pick on Ricardo Lopez, forgot about him .. He was fantastic in his weight, sadly his weight will never be compared with the more 'marquee' weights but im glad somebody name checked Lopez, watching him was poetry .. I dont think Chavez, Hagler, Morales, Barerra, Hopkins, Mosley, Tyson or Pac can be considered for number 1 complete fighter .... Tyson had a fatal floor, his psyche was fragile, he always fought flakes who were scared of him, put him in with some of the heavyweight warriors of the past who arent easily intimidated and its a whole new equation .. I'd like to mention Salvador Sanchez too, i was watching his fights with Gomez and Nelson the other night and he is super smooth .. Im not even gonna mention Ali, on any 'Great' category he is quite rightly listed but it gets a bit boring always talking about 'Just how great Ali' was ....
Are you joking? Dempsey is probably the greatest ring draw in history he had blinding speed and power great boxing ability as well, if you read what great boxing historians or people who saw him fight they always rate him extremely high, In the Willard fight he isn't as fast as he is because it was filmed by a hand crank camera when a man restored it to it's proper speed he said he was even more astounded by Dempseys speed, he had it all
