So imagine chris byrd fights the schedule that jimmy young did, same opponents same dates. Imagine the same for jimmy young.

Do you think either would have more success than they did? would they be able to surpass each other's achievements?

    Chris Byrd:

    Jimy young:

Don't worry about bs decisions (I had young beating shavers, foreman and ali - losing to norton and ocasio; I had byrd beating oquendo and golota - losing to wlad) just consider the sduccess they'd have had in the ringa against the same opponents.

They'd do about aswell but I'm not sure Byrd manages to stay away from Foreman for the 12rounds, he had a tendency to ropa dope, which although Ali pulled it off, I'm not sure Byrd could

I don't think twelve rounds would have been required. Foreman got to young but couldn't finish him off. By the end of the fight his power isn't enough to take out someone as durable or defensive as byrd was.

The byrd that fought ike would most likely be blasted out by george. But the byrd from around the time of the vitali, tua and holyfield victory should be able to get past 8 rounds whereby george wouldn't be much of a threat any more.

I don't remember clearly but didn't Byrd reduced his rope-a-dope tactics considerably after Ibeabuchi fight?

Yeah during his prime it wasn't his main tool.

Once he'd won the belt though, his legs weren't as fluid as they once were and he returned to those tactics. However it could have been a result of the opponents being much bigger (golota and mccline were huge!)

I thought decline was the main reason - Byrd already was 32 when he beat Holyfield.

If i remember correctly that was the last time he looked like former self.

Byrd toned down the clowning as well after the Ike.

I think they would have very simliar careers, though Young's relevance as a first class contender is absurdly short(75-77)...like two years while Byrd hung around the top 10 for almost a decade.

This. I think he'd have swept the early opponents before being knocked out by shavers.

I then think he'd have beaten each of young's opponents up until norton which I do think he'd lose. (Norton at that point was better than ali by a fair bit imo).

I think he beats ocasio twice. Cooney is not much better than golota so I think even past prime byrd would beat cooney. Obviously he'd have forced another title shot had he beat ocasio and cooney but beating holmes would be a step too far for chris if it dues came off.

I don't think chris would settle for gatekeeper status as jimmy did.

Regarding young's swap. I see no way he could have improved upon what chris did. He wouldn't have beaten wlad and whilst green he'd probably have lost to ike.

The early Shavers and Ike losses are interchangable in my opinion.

I think prime for prime, they are about equal..but Young's peak is so short. Would he have time to even grab an alphabet title?

For me, young's prime runs from the rematch robbery against shavers in 74 until the norton loss in 78.

Transpose that with chris's prime from 00-04 and it isn't too disimilar.

Young would have outpointed the version of holyfield that byrd beat.

I'd like to believe he beats the version of golota and mccline that byrd also beat but that isn't a certainty. He'd certainly not have beaten wlad in 06 anyways.

Byrd was prime already in the Ibeabuchi fight - just overconfident in his own defensive invulnerability.

Though you can say Ike "helped" him become a better fighter.;)

I'm unsure whether i'd call byrd prime in the ike fight. It's certainly debatable, i'm just not convinced what side I fall on.

Stretching..Young still only held contender status for 3 years. That's nobody to contender to gate keeper in such a short span.

Prior to Ike in the 90s, Byrd was still a top 10 ranked fighter with decent wins. And when Young as losing to Ossico, Byrd was still squeezing past Golota, McCline, and the Ding-A-Ling Man before losing his #1 spot to a dominating Champion.

Think about it, despite a more solid career, Byrd didn't get his first title shot until his 8th year as a Pro. By this point, Young was already approaching the Ossie fights. At best, Young might hold it together for the Tua win.

    What's stretching?
I merely said young's prime, imo, was from the shavers rematch to the norton loss.

I believe byrd's prime was, imo, from the vitali victory up until golota.

Which parts do you believe are being stretched?
