Should there be a Compulsory fitness test, that must be passed by all boxers, before each fight....? We all know boxers have to pass a medical, but what about a physical. And I'm not talking about, a shitty run on a treadmill, I'm talking about a serious conducted sessions, maybe over a week long period. This test should put a stop to overweight boxers, in the heavyweight division. This test will consist of.. A military intense phsyical and performance examination. Bleep test, body weight exercises etc etc..
Why not just ignore their fights? That would weed them out. There's always a few overweight slobs who are worth watching even though they aren't great athletes, like Solis or Peter, for example.
Just because its another variable that gives a fight a different possible outcome. Some guys have more skills , some guys have better engines y'know Joe Frazier wasnt particularly skillfull but he could out gut and out last guys. Its up to the fighter to get himself in shape if he doesnt then its his own fault. i can see where you're coming from but for me its all part of the great unkown that makes boxing exciting , if the guy makes weight thats enough for me.
How's that meant to work with a fighters carefully programmed training routine? And... it probably wouldnt work anyway. They have medicals, anything else would probably be a restriction of trade and could be against european labour laws. So, all in all, nope.
How practical would it be for the small hall shows who rely on journeymen? Those guys arn't going to want to take days off a paid job in order to take a week long fitness test.
Every 3 months, you will have to retake this test... It will be like a camp, maybe not a week long, but the test will be over a duration of a few days maybe.... So this will incourage fighters to stay in shape, all year round. Improving their performances, and improving the sports image. People don't view or take boxing as serious anymore, because half the time..it does not look like the boxers themselves do.
But most of these journeymen don't stay in shape all year round because they have families, jobs, 'real life' problems etc. Its not realistic to expect that type of person to take time off/ away from his family to take a fitness test that will allow him to box 5 times a year for a few of hundred quid a pop. With the greatest of respect to them, most of these guys don't live to fight. Its a hobby and a bit of extra spending money, any extra obstacles put in their way could push them out of the sport altogether.
If you break into the top 100 rankings in your weight class/worldwide. You have qualified for this test/evaluation/camp...every 3 months you must attend this compulsory fitness test. Domestically, if you break into the top 100 in your weight class. You will also qualifie for a similar camp, which you must attend every 3 months. If you don't complete the test, you get your boxing license suspended, until you can complete the test to satisfictory standards..... This will build better athlete's, better boxers, and it will improve the image the sport has in the UK, especially with the Heavyweights. I also think a funding scheme needs to be set up for boxing, i don't think boxing gets enough funding off the national lottery.
Can you imagine a 45 year old George Foreman doing a ****ing bleep test? He could still knock guys out though and that is all that mattered.
Should be made mandatory for the British heavyweights, take heavyweight to mean gorge on buffets daily these guys.
