Con O'Riordan a boxer who was the sparring partner for Peter Jackson, and later Bob Fitzsimmons died after receiving a soft punch to the head from Fitzsimmons during a public exhibition. O' Riordan was drunk, and it was to this his death was attributed. Here is the account. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F70B12F73A5515738DDDA10994D9415B8485F0D3
wow....first of all, what a piece of gold that article is.....i LOVE getting my hands on articles like that, so a big thanks from me for finding it. now...for how long did it become a criminal offence to kill man inside a ring?
I discuss this extensively in my book, In the Ring With Bob Fitzsimmons. Fitz stood trial for this, but was acquitted. One thing I will say about ring deaths in general is that usually the reporters and the spectators, in the interest of the sport and the surviving fighter, tried to find every excuse under the sun for the death, other than boxing (ie that he took a hard blow or too many), because then it might lead to a criminal conviction for murder or manslaughter, and possible legislation banning it or greater police intervention preventing or limiting bouts. So they usually blamed the death on something else, other than the fact that the guy just got hit and died.
