recently ricky burns has added a conditioning coach to his team, most of the top boxers also have these, can somebody explain exactly what they do? to my knowledge a conditioning coach can also help improve speed and power. Is it purely a dietary thing? Any help??
Matthew has been a excellent addition to the team, with regards to Ricky's fitness it's hard to tell if that's improved as he's such a fit athlete, but what has improved is his stregth and punch power, so for that alone its positive
Strength and Conditioning is getting increased exposure in boxing and can make a huge impact on performance. Boxing can also benefit from other evidence based professions which would impact on performance eg prehabilitation/rehabilitation physiotherapy, nutritionists and even psychologists. All of these aras are used by GB Boxing at Sheffield. The use of science will only improve the preparation and performance of a boxer though there are loads of charlatans out there with no quals who will do more damage than good to the boxer and this isn't fair as its a serious sport to get it wrong by not knowing what you're doing!! Just did a google and found this, might be of interest to boxers/coaches http://thepop.org.uk/pop-workshops/
From what I can see the strength and conditioning coach is a big help when it comes to making weight. Kerry Keyes worked wonders with Hatton getting him down to 10st especially given Hatton's weight fluctuations. S&C's have gotten themselves a bit of a bad reputation with the likes of Ariza and Meme. Anybody lifting weights need to be very careful about their shoulder and knee joints. I'm not that big on the idea of maxing out on squats at low reps. Never do press behind neck it you respect your rotator cuffs.
How much of the S&C's coaches bad reputations are in part down to the athlete themselves? They are required to cut corners at times I would imagine due to the sheer laziness of the athletes involved. I wouldn't exactly like to be Chavez Jr's S&C coach for example!
Some S&C's are appointed because of their knowledge of the dark arts. Why else have some of the dodgiest steroid dealers of all time in a boxers camp.
S and C coaches have made huge impact in explosive sports like rugby and boxing where power is paramount, people forget that rest is equally as important as activity and the avoidance of injury, doesn't Froch record all his stats and continues to improve over time.
Boxing is ideally suited to quality S&C, and other sport science? IMO every boxer/coach should know what they do, S&C scores, weight, & load of other performance variables on every day of their preparation camp. If they do they can compare between camps and improve each one. Other sports do this really well, boxing starting but generally still quite "old school" though some integrating it. If a boxer/coach was to embrace all the science and prepare using a scientifically and evidence based practice by into their camp then performance gains would be significant. By mixing the science with the "art" of the coach performance gains!!
If a S&C coach has proper qualifications and know there stuff that can help boxers big time. Human kinetics is important and knowledge of how the anatomy is ideal. However knowing the individual is the best scenario. Some exercises will work better with Certain athletes. I believe the best way to get a boxer better is explosive power and speed training. A lot believe in cardio endurance. The best results vary on boxers.. Ricky is very fit l wouldn't have him doing much endurance work mostly speed and power!! Be interesting to see if any improvement
Strength and conditioning coaches are just trendy accessories of the moment a fighters trainer should no how to get his fighter to his ultimate fitness after all it's there job did haggler ,Leonard ,Duran have strength and conditioners for there fifteen round fights ?
I pretty much agree with this. Boxing trainers need to educate themselves on new methods. Some S&C's came into the sport bringing PED's with them which is why some fighters used S&C's.
I no things evolve and you have to move with times but I just can't understand how a trainer wouldn't no circuits and fitness drills to get the best from his fighter to much heavy strength work can make fighters stiff and slow light weights and own body weight circuits with high reps at intense rates every trainer should no this rather than employing people with gimmick toys to train there guys.
Well in Ricky's case he was getting bored with the same routine ie circuits most days so we introduced S&C and he seems a lot happier for the change Don't get me wrong loads of the exercises we've done for years but there are plenty new ones a d we can all learn
