What works for MM may not work for the next guy, he doesn't have to be the benchmark. If you mirror what he does it's not going to make you fight like him. S&C coaches will work for some fighters and not so much for others, I'll leave it at that.
Like each exercise/training routine should be fighter specific, so should the team needed around them, doesnt have to be a 'big' team either. Everything in moderation
How many boxers can actually afford a S&C coach, they don't get paid enough as it is with the effort they put in, 8 weeks of using a S&C coach won't come cheap, would think it's only feasible when you're getting to European level, unless they hardly charge you due to the advertisement in working with a professional athlete or a sponsor may cover the costs.
There is better ways to build strength in the legs than running 6 miles a day.. Only main reason long runs are good for boxers is to take weight off. A S&C coach who recommends 6 mile low intensity runs for boxing does not really understand the sport. Their is a difference between cardiovascular endurance and muscle endurance.. I think boxers who run 6 miles a day 6 days a week will not have jelly/sore legs as I'm sure they will wear the right equipment and do runs they know that the are comfortable with. However this wouldn't be the right way.. When dropping weight running like this would take the weight of the wrong places.. That's why we see so many boxers with Skinny legs.. I agree with what someone put problem is some S&C coaches are not really familiar with boxing and there ideas may be a bit off. Then on another side some S&C coaches have been in boxing with no qualifications so don't really understand the science.. I think fighters / trainers need to be very careful when appointing a S&C coach it could have a detrimental approach.
Ultimately any fighter should be the best judge of his own body. They will know what works and what doesn't work for them. Some just may be a little more open minded than others about changing routine.
I disagree completely.. Most boxers don't understand the science.. Most will work until fail.. There is a lot more to it than just training until your body hurts.. Like I said you need to invest a lot of time in the athlete your working with.. Really find out what's the best way to push them.. People tend to wonder why fighters gas in fights. That's lack of knowledge and correct training techniques.. I believe the 3 most important aspects of boxing is High intensity work - have the work rate to out work your opponent... explosive power - being able to hurt your opponent, will also help with taking shots.. Speed - hit and not be hit.. I think tailoring a package to suit boxers may vary the order in which you may use these. Also adding in some plyometric training along with endurance work and flexibility is a lot better than Cardio work.. A lot of fighters over train but in the wrong departments so they struggle fight night.. I think in some ways In years to come S&C coaches will become just as Important as boxing coaches.. Look how much they are used in Pro football and rugby
Boxing coaches will understand preparation for anecdotal and experiential perspective, which is very mportant, but not necessarily the science behind what they are doing. For example Ice baths are all the rage as a recovery strategy, but does the coach know at what temperature, what duration, and when to do them, that the research says will have the greatest benefits? Coaches should look at all possibilities to maximise the preparation of their boxers to gain any small advantages. It's the same with dieting, making weight "properly" and using the science will give the fighter a massive advantage compared to fighting weight drained
You are right. When I wrote that I had in my head only the top boxers, world class. And also experienced. The guys at this level will know their own bodies and what works. They've done it year after year. Froch probably being a prime example. If he were introduced to a new S&C coach today who tried new methods, I'm pretty sure Froch would know what was working for him and what wasn't.
Yes that's the exact point a coach should work with the boxer to find out what works. At this minute in time there is no real money for S&C coaches in the uk for boxing. I would say a maximum intake for a coach should be 4 or 5 boxers and ideally it would be at the same stable.. Not many stables in the uk that size. And with the exception of Groves and Froch. Who can really afford a high quality S&C coach.. How much would a fighter be willing to pay?? It's a full time job and should focus on all aspects as well as training, Nuitrition and general wellbeing.. I am interested to see what if any improvements Ricky has had..
Likewise. Billy, guess it's quite early days still as Ricky has only adopted this during this camp but can you feel any power improvement on the pads? Like I said it's maybe too early to tell.
I've done my Right Rotator-Cuff in. And now my left RC is starting to hurt. No pressing at all for me. :bart The thing with S&C coaches etc is that many people will be like 'Do your long runs, your groundwork, sparring etc' but it isn't 1978! Invaluable, IMO.
Well Ali,Duran, hagler,Leonard ect it never done them any harm running 6 or 7 days a week I know fighters who only run a few times a week and beleive me it shows, any coach would tell you that. Peter Harrison used to say running made up 60% of a fighters training
