Confession: Adam Smith is the best boxing commentator in the world in my opinion.

In all the years I have followed the game Ian Darke in my opinion is top 2 for blow by blow callers. I have Lampley at number one. Howard Cossell amd Harry Carpenter were great earlier callers.

 

Roy's boxing brain & knowledge are severely underrated.

 

He's surrounded by so many buffoon pundits he can't help but look good.

 

For my liking he talks TOO much. This isn't radio and it's not all about the commentator. A recent interview with Mike Costello, who by the way I think is the best boxing commentator going, was very telling, where he said that the main difference he finds and has had to adapt to is that, on TV, you need to give a fight room to breathe and let the action speak for itself, whereas on radio you are basically acting as the listeners eyes as well as their ears. Smith would do well to listen to and act upon this advice.

 

He'd be fine as long as he's banned from combining the letters 'A' and 'J'. I get the impression he's nursing a semi whenever he does, and that's not a pleasant thought...

 

Important to say he has his strengths and I don't like some of the digs he gets here for some of his idiosyncrasies. The world would be a dull place if every slightly leftfield comment drew some of the brickbats that have been dished out here. However although he knows boxing and does have a good voice for upping the energy levels and excitement, he's become something of a parody of himself over time.

I used to like his commentary more but over the past few years it's become increasingly grating as he and his team have become more and more cheerleaders for the home fighters. I found myself dreading the moment we'd lose Andy Clarke's knowledgeable and relatively low key delivery on fight night to be replaced by Adam crow barring in some prepared phrase or another in as clumsy a fashion as Sam Matterface recently displayed at the Euro championships.

The other night there was an obvious difference as Macklin's scoring and his commentary were no longer required to big up the home talent. It should've been refreshing, but in a way it just stuck in my throat because it showed just how far they'd previously betrayed their calling to the watching fans to act as impartial journalist and boxing expert respectively.

 

Love Costello on R5L. On TV I like Barry 'he just needs to take a half a step back' Jones, and Malignaggi is good

 

Agree with these picks. Andy Lee is also very good. Can't stand Bellew who is basically a cheerleader and finds it almost impossible to be objective or impartial.

 

He reads the best children books to children too.
