First of all, let us all say a MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS to Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez for a performance which was nothing short of supreme!

In his mid-30s, this former featherweight champion has stepped up to lightweight and knocked out arguably the top two lightweights in the world in his last two fights. Add these wins to the fact that most people believe he edged the decision over Pacquiao in their last fight, and I do genuinely think we now have bona fide joint pound-for-pound number 1s.

However, back to last night. Juan Diaz was a 25 year-old natural lightweight believed by many to be the best lightweight out there. He is younger, bigger, stronger, fresher than Juan Manuel Marquez. He came out and fought the perfect fight for the first few rounds, backing Marquez up against the ropes and unleashing fierce, accurate combinations. After 4 rounds, Diaz was undoubtedly ahead on the cards.

Though I will say, I thought the commentators were guilty of overselling Diaz's success early on. Diaz visibly wobbled Marquez one time, I think it was in round two, but Marquez fired back almost immediately. Other than that, I never thought JMM was in any danger of being crushed underfoot. The commentators were making out as if Diaz was dominant, but I felt as if Marquez was, if not comfortable exactly, at least confident that he was not losing control of the fight and that he was biding his time looking for the opportunity to break Diaz's defence.

Marquez's skill has never been in doubt, but last night by the mid-rounds he was magnificent. His combinations, in particular his use of the uppercut, his lateral movement, his stamina and workrate levels, his handspeed, his resilience and determination, all of Dinamita's best attributes came to the fore to allow him to wear down his younger, stronger opponent, and when the end came, it was spectacular.

The first knockdown was similar to the first knockdown of Margarito by Mosley, some wicked headshots staggered Diaz and he spun to the floor, but did not look out of it yet. But you knew that Marquez, the consummate pro and all-round class act, would not let the moment pass. Superb accurate flurry, picture perfect uppercut finisher, and as soon as Diaz hit the floor the referee called it off.

For a former featherweight champ in his mid-30s, to become the first man to knock out as good and as strong a lightweight as the Baby Bull only months after becoming the frst man to knock out Joel Casamayor, it really is some achievement.

I now rank Dinamita joint p4p#1 and among the top 100 OAT. Last night was his career best win IMO. He now truly deserves to be rated as an equal alongside the greatest Mexicans of his generation, Barrera, Morales and Lopez.

What next?

With Pacquiao tied up until Autumn with the superfight with Ricky Hatton, I'd like to see Marquez stay active and fight in the summer. A clash with the winner of Amir Kkan-Marco Antonio Barrera is being spoken of, and while I think that would be a relatively easy win for Juan Manuel, I don't know if it's the most exciting match-up out there.

Edwin Valero would make for an exciting clash and again a relatively comfortable win for JMM, but I'd like to see a fight with Nate Campbell at junior-welter. If JMM is going to fight Pacquiao again it is most likely going to be at 140, so it would be good for Juan to get some experience of that weight, and I think Campbell would provide him with a good test. Other good opponents would be Joan Guzman or even Timothy Bradley at 140, as that would allow JMM to become the first four-weight world champion. There are some really good options out there for him.

In terms of taking on the best and the toughest comp available and knocking them out in style, Calzaghe was never in the same league as guys like Pacquiao and Marquez. I'm glad you have finally seen that.

I scored the first Pac-JMM fight to Pac by a point (the myth that this was a dominant performance by JMM absolutely bamboozles me. I can only attribute it to the fact people were so impressed that JMM rallied back after 3 knockdowns. For me it was a very close fight on the cards and I think Pac did edge it, many close rounds that were hard to score but the 3 KD's swung it Pac's way IMO), I scored the 2nd to JMM by a point. I have it dead even after 24 brilliant rounds. Can't wait for the 3rd fight.

I will agree that Pac's chin is strangely underrated, mostly by idiots who know he was stopped twice as a youngster, not realizing that one was a bodyshot. Pac has one of the best chins in boxing. When was the last time he was down, or even noticeably hurt? Considering the comp he has fought and the wars he has been in, his chin has been superb.

sorry how is he joint number one? he has close fights, pac dominates his opponents. he lost to pac. and his resume is nowhere near pacs. pacs a 5 weight champ going for his 6th and has beaten better fighters.
