Appleby is massively over-rated... I thought John had an awful night, he looked rusty and struggled to get his shots off. VH your a good sport- every credit but I think Appleby is nowhere near as good as Paul Truscott.

I thought Appleby won and he has some nice moves but he's awfully wide with some of those hooks.

    He is only 20 Jeff.

To beat John at that age in a convincing win from what I seen is an achievement in itself.

Only the second time I've seen Appleby, some observations:

    - Looks big for a featherweight
    - Great heart and will to win
    - Signs of adaptability, can fight from range or in close
    - Looks to have a bit of pop, and could back his man up when he wanted to
    - Looks good when he punches straight and uses his length

    However...

    - Gets really wide at times. Some of those hooks are starting off in a different postcode, and they leave him wide open
    - Doesn't use his jab enough, which is wasteful with his reach
    - Defence is generally porus, to the body too, but particularly to the overhand right. Needs to be improved quickly, or he could find himself losing a fight he shouldn't
    - He is not precise with his punches, the accuracy leaves a lot to be desired
    - Although he is adaptable, his fight management and ring IQ needs a bit of work. He can fight different ways, but I'm not sure he knows when to use them. I would have preferred him to jab and use his length against this type of opponent. This is just experience

Overall, the kid did real good for his age and lack of fights and I had him a clearer winner than the judges

Appleby got the win for me...clear enough too.

But he didn't set the world on fire doing it.

Simpson outboxed him pretty handily in the first 2 rounds, then Appleby started to just throw himself in at Simpson, launching punches from too far out. If Simpson had have had (a) better footwork, or (b) a bigger punch, then Appleby would have been out of there or else beaten on a wide UD.

I think appelby did pretty well considering he has only had 11 pro bouts before this bout and he is only 20. Also these are the kind of fights were prospects like him gain vital experience and set up for better days.

Its an impressive scalp for a 20 year old but people have been raving saying how he's potentially better then Alex Arthur. No chance his defence is non existant and he smothers most of his work. I dunno i'm just not sold.... Truscott and Appleby have to be the most fragile champions in the country. Simpson can't of been happy with his performance. Maybe i'm been a bit negative but that was no future world champion in that ring tonight he will have to improve a hell of a lot to progress any further.

Appleby is a good prospect but will not go any higher than Euro level and I am sure he will get found out there as well eventually.

Well done to the lad for his win.

That is impossible to say, he is very raw at the moment

They don't even need to think about moving him on. Keep him busy, and against a range of different styles. He doesn't need every fight as tough as last night.

well now he's british champ, he won't have to go looking for tough fights.

i imagine there'll be a rematch. and then you have derry matthews (unless he's definitely moved up), truscott, bhatia, lindsay

btw i can't be arsed making a separate thread but what did you think of ryan brawley on last nights undercard. first time i've seen him and thought he looked decent.
