but even if he didn't get it (which he deserves) he's always been considered a hall of famer to me to begin with

the reason he was not inducted was Tommy's fault. To be inducted you have to let 5 full years go by of not boxing. Everytime 5 years almost went by Hearns fought. He fought consistently to 1995,, then every year until April 2000, then he fought again in 2005, and 2006, so the first time 5 full years went by was the fall of 2011 when he was voted in.

The list of welterweights who have beaten a lineal light heavyweight champion is prety short:

    Barbados Joe Walcott
    Mickey Walker
    Tomy Hearns

    You get the general idea.

Congrats, Hitman. 'Totally deserved' is right.

Possibly the most exciting fighter of the past 40-50 years; definitely among the top 5 in this category. During his lengthy prime, combined stunning KO power with blinding speed and excellent boxing skills honed in his great amateur days, not to mention superb heart. As responsible as anybody for the resurgence in boxing's popularity in the late 1970s, as he climbed the welterweight ranks with one brutal KO after another, virtually selling out wherever he performed and greatly raising each TV network's (esp. CBS's) ratings when his bouts were featured. Equally as responsible for making the welters of that period the best division in boxing, along with Leonard, Duran, Palomino, Cuevas, and Benitez. Probably the premier 154-pounder of all time.

Leonard's and Hagler's stars shine brighter, unquestionably (o.k., and Iran Barkley's, too), because Tommy was a magnificent foil to them, who pushed them to some of their greatest moments.

On the strength of the foregoing boxing attributes, Hearns would KILL Mayweather Jr. at ANY weight that Tommy could make.

Was also one of the nice guys in boxing, despite having maybe the greatest staredown with those deadly-looking eyes of his.

Halls of Fame exist because athletes like Thomas Hearns come along, once or twice in a generation, to grace a sport.

I wouldn't call Hearns a welterweight, certainly not when he was fighting light-heavyweights. He's too big there to be called a welterweight.

Who was the "lineal light-heavyweight champion" he beat ?

Congrats to The HItman..one of my all-time favourites..the man who got me into this game..when my uncle took me to watch him fight Pipino Cuevas at neighbours TV I was hooked into boxing.

Neve could understand how a skinny tall dude like that could punch that hard..that fast..I was mesmerised..and the fight game became my No1 game forever..Hated Leonard for a while for stopping him..as I got older I got to understand some thingz about boxing.

One hack of a guy..and one hell of a fighter.Salute!!

Pipino Cuevas was such a great boxer, but man, this is a job for Hagler or prime Leonard. (even money on Hearns in both remATCHES btw)
