Big congratulations to Floyd Mayweather who is truly an extraordinary boxer. There's no way he hand picks his opponents,Castillo x2,Correles,Judah,DLH,Hatton,all beaten reads as a 'who's who' of recent boxing greats. Brilliant footwork/defence. He was too good for Hatton who as we all know is a very difficult fighter to beat. Observations 1) Two fights for Hatton at 147, and hasn't looked brilliant in either,it's clear he shouldn't fight at Welter again. Plenty of good fights for him at 140 2) Joe Cortez was a disgrace. This was the 2nd worst refereeing I've ever seen(only the ref in Ottke v Reid being worse) Fortunately his appalling refereeing had no bearing on the outcome. Floyd would have won whoever the ref so there's no excuse from me. 3) Floyd would comfortably defeat Cotto,Williams, or any other welter today and I'd pick him to beat any Light Middle as well
Actually yes it is. I can understand questioning the point deduction but I don't think that 1 bad point deduction equates to the most disgracefull refereing ever. It seems to me that hatton fans wanted the ref to allow Hatton to wrestle and latch on to floyd all night or something. He broke up clinches that is what kept the action going in the fight. If hatton had his way they would have spent the entire fight with him grabbing on and Floyd jamming his elbow in his throat.
people are clinging to the reffing......it made no difference he warned both fighters for holding broke both fighters up......Hatton however DELIBRATELY.....pushed floyd through the ropes instead of just backing off....then proceded to just punch him in the back of the head while floyd was through the ropes i mean COME ON.....thats like you walking up to a cop and just slapping him and then saying what? Hatton did the shyt so blatantly had he just kept doing it while in midst of a clinch like he did all night anyway all he would have got was warnings like both fighters did...no Hatton just out rights inflicts an ILLEGAL move as plain as day.....what do you think the ref is posed to do?
Great post mate! I agree with everything you have said. 1 thing I would say is that I still believe Floyd is beatable. I think Cotto would have a good chance. I actually think Ricky would have a good chance in a rematch now, he will have learnt a lot from that and he won't go in as fired up, he would fight a cleverer fight.
I really don't want to debate the refereeing mate as I don't want to come across as making any excuses. Floyd won fair and square. What I WOULD say though, is that after the 2nd round an official from the NSC had 'a word' with Cortez, and following this his refereeing improved SLIGHTLY but noticeably
indeed. cotto would be no problem, but still harder than williams. the reach and height advantage would mean ****. mayweather can adapt to anything and he is on a completely different level than paul williams.
I know you are not making excuses but I feel like I was watching a different fight than everyone that is complaing about Cortez. I had absolutly no problem with him breaking up the clinches. I can see why people question the point deduction and I don't know what the **** he was thinking threatning to stop the fight between the 8th and 9th rounds but I don't think that equates to the wrose refering ever. It was an ugly fight for a while there and it is not easy to be the third man in the ring on those cases.
Basically Hatton fans were hoping for a performance where Hatton mauled his opponent all night a la the Tszyu fight. This could not / did not happen in this fight, because Cortez rightly would allow Hattons clinching all night.
