Conn versus Loughran

burt, i enjoy most of your posts on here but sometimes you prove that you're completely full of it. you feel that conn beats jones, that's fine but to imply jones never had any heart for his entire career is ridiculous. it's impossible to fake your way through an entire career (save calzaghe), especially in a sport like boxing which i consider to be the ultimate sport. yes, conn was an incredible fighter but i think even you understand that jones will go down as the greater fighter.

 

K, now that I learned "I am full of it ",I will now take a laxative. OK, now I feel better ...K, did I ever state that Roy Jones,who I thought as a middleweight had incredible handspeed and power,had no "heart" ? Never said that or implied no such thing. The word "bottom" was a term that the bare knuckle fighters and writers used to describe what a fighter had at his most vulnerable times,and YET succeeded. Roy Jones's chin was found wanting,as opposed to his other great talents...And I enjoy him as a boxing analyst today too....But I still think that somehow a Billy Conn, Ezzard Charles, Jimmy Bivens, Archie Moore, Mathew Saad, Michael Spinks,
Harold Johnson etc, would have somehow beaten him as light heavyweights, for they had more "bottom"... I believe his true weight was as a super middleweight.... Cheers...

 

"bottom" aka heart. yes, the post-heavy, past 35 jones aged terribly, just like charles. charles had 25 losses and was stopped 7 times but he had "bottom" compared to jones?

anyway, all of the fighters you listed would have a chance vs jones imo except saad muhammad. who didn't love watching him fight but jones' skill level is way above saad's. that's a very easy night for jones imo.

 

Yes K, Roy Jones started his downslide at the age of 35, so his not having
"bottom" is a bit unfair of me. But I still go by my picks above. They competed in a much more competitive age than Jones had to face. At any rate Jones's skill at his best was almost surreal... :hi:

 

Absolutely no way will you find a non biased boxing lover who will agree that Roy was a greater fighter then Billy Conn. Hands down.

Sounds a bit gay to me Burt, you should watch some Roy Jones fight, he knocks out Conn pretty easily, you should see some of his fights, the greatest boxing talent of all time :good

 

I'm pleased to discover this isn't some form of homosexual patwa Burt. OK I suggest watching Jones in the first Tarver fight, the Gonzalez fight and the Sosa fight. I won't use the same language as yourself, but he shows chin and heart in these fights. Lou Del Valle knocked him down too and many thought Lou Del Valle beat Virgil Hill for the championship

Also if you enjoyed Robinson-Lamotta watch the Jones-Hall fight, brutal. If you're a fan of Robinson you have to be a fan of his modern equivilent, Roy Jones Jr

 

i'm biased so i don't count but this is a silly statement regardless and tries to discredit anyone who would possibly disagree with you

 

Roy was easily the greater and better fighter. He's a class above Conn.

But I'll always love Billy more. He was a warrior, and he stepped up to challenge The Man in one of the gutsiest performances a boxer has ever moved up to give. Roy may have been a phenom, but Billy Conn was a warrior, and I tend to prefer those.

 

Conn was the faster and slicker of the two. Lourghan had skill, but looks a little rigid at times on film. Conn had more agility, coordination, and speed. I would pick the best version of Conn to defeat the best version of Loughran.

 

Conn has the better resume and beat 10 fights that held the title in their career.

He also fought 10 heavyweghts and beat 9 of them. The one Billy didn't beat he should have until he got too hot and went for the knockout in the 13th.

I can't see Tommy almost doing a number on Louis.

Conn's whipping left hand jab/hook punch was incredibly quick and came at angles hard to defend. His footwork was also great and exposed Louis' weaker point. Conn knocked out HW's but was not noted for having devastating KO power. He beats Loughran over 15 by 4 or 5 rounds for me in a UD.

I'd put big money on Saad over 15. Would probably make a killing, too, judging based on how overrated Jones is at the weight.
