Don't act as if he's a level headed kid that's just suddenly been hyped. Yes he has got pressure off his dads name, absolutely. But look at his social media channels, the kid acts like he's Mayweather! He said himself in the press confrence about how he's been the best prospect this year and most improved fighter in the country. it's absolute rubbish! He's gone straight in to the "essex boy" celebrity life style and is fighting for fame. People who do that get found out VERY quickly in this sport.
Could be fighting at 47 for now just so he doesn't have to spend too much time on cutting weight at this early stage so he can improve his skills. Haven't seen the fight yet but by the sounds of it he's got a long way to go
I don’t hate the kid. I have no animosity towards him at all. It just irritates me that he has that luxury to immerse himself in the sport but he wastes it by throwing the skills out the window and going toe to toe instead. He doesn’t have to go and do a shift somewhere to pay his bills, he can totally dedicate himself to the sport, but a performance like that must be hugely infuriating for his coaching team. His ego is clearly too big to listen to them.
I thought he looked completely out of his comfort zone, like he knew something was missing, not hating on the guy but, his train will come to a halt in the not too distant future, seen it all before with young hyped kids like this. Shame really but it is what it is.
This is why I said in another thread “this is a card they all need but it shouldn’t get publicity and shouldn’t get hyped”. These are all young fighters plying their trade. They need these fights, they need these setbacks, they need these knockdowns, they need it all to make them a better fighter. I’m indifferent towards Conor Benn at this stage in his career. No opinion on him either way. He’s just turned 21 with barely no amateur career. These mistakes are expected.
Back to the hype job and exposure. I can’t decide whether these nextgen cards are a good thing or not. Or shall I say them being televised. On one hand it’s fights they all need and exposure to help build a fan base and commercial base for sponsors etc. On the other hand it’s gdttinc to some of their heads and making them think they’re superstars when they haven’t even won a British title yet.
Benn needs to drop down to lightweight, he is far too small for Welterweight. I felt he was extremely fortunate to get a win, the ref's card was a disgrace. I had it even.
Can we not all at least be a bit happy that we got to see such a good fight last night? Two lads putting it all on the line, not the best in terms of technical ability but very entertaining none the less. I enjoyed last nights card, wouldn't mind seeing more of these mid-week nextgen shows then save saturday night fights for more competitive match ups.
Benn can't have it both ways. If you fast track your boxing career, turn pro at 19 without bothering with the amateurs cos you want the rewards now, sign with matchroom to fight regularly on sky, lap up the attention, talk a big game. Then you put yourself out there to be judged. It's not hating, it's honest opinions. Benn's twitter/instagram bio is "I'm cut from a different cloth and they don't make that fabric no more". If you give it that sort of chat, you best show some sort of boxing ability. What we saw last night was trash and Benn should be told. Else go and do his learning in the privacy of the gym. Anyone notice how unsympathetic Tony sims' manner was? Because he knows. You can't get away with saying your learning if you don't listen to instructions or try and box at all.
The commentary from Bellew was comical. 5 Points down going into the 4rth round. The Benn comes back with a knockdown of his own in the 4th, wins the 5th close, and wins the last 10-8. Bellew then starts back peddling and says the scoring is subjective etc and Benn might have nicked it. It was a draw. The scoring was terrible, he was getting battered round the ring like the novice he is.
What's irritating me now is the talk of a rematch, like it was something major and they need to set the record straight. What's the point? If that was scored 57-54 Benn then what would the other lad have to do to actually get a decision or a win? Knock Benn out.. TWICE? Matchroom, Hearn, Sky and IFL have been force feeding us Conor Benn simply because of Nigel Benn and they love hyping up fighters and selling tickets, PPV's and all that but have once again insulted boxing fans intelligence and been made to look stupid in my opinion by going way over the top with another novice who just isn't all that. And before anybody tells me "it's just a learning fight", "Benn hasn't got a lot of experience" or name other fighters who were dropped early in their careers like Brook, or Quigg.. I say to you, NO, this is why they have not let him anywhere near anybody who has even a decent dig, there has been zero danger in all his fights for a reason, Benn is a KO waiting to happen. I don't know how far he will go, on that showing I don't think he wins a British title any time soon but I genuinely believe he won't win a world title at welterweight, that said according to Eubank Jr and his fans the IBO is a world title so I could end up being wrong in some people's eyes.
The NXTGEN cards are essentially just a quota filler for Hearn to satisfy Sky and are cheap to produce. Sky really need to dial back on the hype videos for fighters who haven't reached even English Title level- I understand Benn is a name because of his dad but the hype around him is verging on delusional. He's young at 21 and actually has quite a good selection of shots for a guy with little experience. That said, he is far too easy to hit, doesn't know when to box and may have a weak chin. I'd like to see him fight off TV at area level in his next two fights and then return in some type of meaningful fight in the Spring.
What I don't understand is a desire to see someone lose or 'exposed' based on a belief they are overhyped or in someway don't deserve the push they are getting. That is what a hater does. What do people expect Benn to do? Turn down tv fights? Turn down sponsorship? All so he can please a tiny minority who are unhappy he is 'overhyped'.
