Thee is a quote from a boxing writer, that makes it into most Louis biographies.

I will look it up tomorrow.

I never read Sharkey picked Dempsey. I read Sharkey stress the difference in their ring politeness. I never read a Schmeling say anything at all. To me either Dempsey hurts him in the first round enough to seriously stun him or Louis does a number on him in a few rounds. I’m think Jack had the tools but not the ring he ntelligence. When stung he saw red and attacked and that would hurt him against someone so fast and so lethal.

Don't bet a lot. Two big hitters anything can happen.

The 14th time Arcel brought a boxer to the center of the ring to face Joe Louis the Brown Bomber turned to Ray deadpan expression and sais "you he again?" Arcel broke up

It may have boiled down as to who could take a shot better.

No info to add, but my take is that it might go a lot longer than everyone else thinks. When fighters get into the ring against someone similar to their level of fighting and magnitude, it normally makes for quite a cagey affair. With so much on the line I couldn't see either fighter going for broke from round one. I could be wrong, but it might just take one power punch from either man to make their opponent seriously rethink their usual strategies. It's also worth noting that both had the tools to neutralise each other, although Dempsey is unlikely to use his supreme foot speed to keep the fight on the outside.

Louis is beat a much better crop of opponents. I'm going to go on that, tho he is liable to hit the canvas.

Interested in what Jack Johnson's opinion of Dempsey was. I've never read anything from him other than he probably wanted to fight him in his later career.

Agree. If you come tearing into Joe Louis you better have an iron chin. Jack was tough but I don't know that he is gonna be able deal with the lasers that are gonna be coming back at him.

In my estimation Dempsey and Louis, like Tyson, have power that's actually just a notch below what they're usually given credit for. I think it's their combination of other assets that makes their power seem even better than it is.

This a rare case where I don't really trust myself to be objective -even though my ego insists I'm unimpeachably objective. I'm a huge fan of both these guys.
