6 rounds into the fight vs Margarito after outboxing Marg instead of crumbling up and getting TKO'd through the pummeling he received round 6 onwards he clinched and rabbit punched through - would the result have been different? I think it would have but this just goes to show that Cotto though good still needs to work on his dynamics. The BEST boxers, all the best, can dapt and do - Cotto imo has some more work to so until he becomes 'the package' of a fighter he should be.
I wouldn't encourage it but hey, most boxers do it, even the great PBF locked arms when the situation called for it Cotto did seem very linear like he had one game plan from the get go that he stuck to, this mleads me to believe he needs to train to become a more versatile fighter if he is to come back stronger after this loss.
I wish Hopkins could have half of Cotto's heart and the ***** might be worth watching. Cotto is a warrior and thats what people pay to see, Hopkins is a theif who should never be on TV again let alone a PPV fight.
hes not saying he wants cotto to be more like hopkins but that cotto could use a lot of help on his defense and maybe learn from someone like the defensive mastermind that is b hop. obviously everyone hates watching b hop fight but if cotto had better defense he would have had been able to at the very least finish the fight. this isnt taking anything away from margarito, margo did a sick job but for cotto to stand a chance at beating him in a possible rematch then he should work on his defense.
Clinching works well against similar size/ smaller oponents and you have to be strong to pull that off IMO. Thats why you didnt see Floyd clinching Delahoya too mutch, but you could see him taking advantage of clinching against Hatton to avoid bodyshots. All Cotto needs is better footwork.
Cotto fought a perfect fight outside of 2 things. He didnt: A) Go to the body on Margo. B) Clinch when necessary - operative word being necessary.
