You need to watch the fights. Ahumada was no joke. He was inferior to Galindez, but likely robbed against Foster. Yaqui Lopez was a tough out for anyone. Conteh schooled him with one hand. Past prime Conteh gave prime Saad a very tough fight right up until the 14th round. Boxrec doesn’t tell half the story. Your post is a very lazy one.
Great article on Monzon while in NYC to fight Tony Licata: Mentions possible Conteh fight....but no Foster fight (too old). “He say he doesn't want to retire before a fight with Valdes,” his interpreter said, “because Valdes talk too much.” At the same table was Victor Galindez, another Argentine boxer, who will defend the World Boxing Association version of the light‐heavyweight title against Jorge Ahumade of Argentina at the Garden in the closed‐circuit TV triple‐header featuring the Muhammad Ali‐Joe Bugner heavyweight title bout from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. “He say he never fight Galindez, very close friend,” his interpreter said. “But maybe he fight John Conteh.” Conteh of England is recognized as the light‐heavyweight champion by the World Boxing Council, but the retired titleholder, Bob Foster, is contemplating a comeback. “No, not Foster,” the interpreter said. “He say Foster too old for fight with me.” This content is protected https://www.nytimes.com/1975/06/19/archives/the-smoldering-middleweight-champ.html
He wouldn`t have knocked him out with a rigt hand because he hardly threw it due to damaging his hand earlier in his career, which is why he was so great with his lead hand, but with Monzon only having to worry about one hand there would be a better chance of him surviving the distance I feel.
When you say bigger do you mean naturally more muscular, because Monzon would have to put onweight and had the height of a light heavy so might carry the wwight wel, having said that Michael Nunn was the same height and was awful at light heavy, I would say though Monzon would do better against Conteh than Nunn would have judging by how Nunn fought at that weight in the 90`s, the reason I bring Nunn up also is because he was very good at middle and him vs Monzon at that weight may have given us a good comparison to how Conteh vs Monzon would have gone at light heavy, P4P Nunn may have been better than Conteh, he was certainly better than Saad Muhammad.
Monzon would carry the weight at 175lbs better than Tiger did because of his height. Foster reach was too much for Tiger even though he KO`d him with a hook, reach is always a big issue for fighters moving up, but Monzon had the reach to match Conteh`s jab.
Yes, I think he fought on a card with Ali or Ali was in England and spoke to him after one of his fights at heavy and said to Conteh you have to move down, so he did! My uncle was a middleweight boxer, but everyone around him told him to move up to heavy because it was the main division so he did and they were far to strong, he told me that 5 months ago and I just stared in disbelieve at the mentality!
Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. You are weird and you dont have a clue. Hate to be nasty but you dont even try man
Suze, I'm probably known as one of the biggest, if not the biggest Monzon fans here, buy I think he did have an off night...and that was the rematch with Emile Griffith in 1973. It was his first fight after getting shot twice by his poor, beleagered wife...and one of those bullets lodged in his shoulder and was never removed for some surgical reason. An off night IMO, for sure, with the following bout, also a rematch, vs Jean-Claude Bouttier, only marginally better...at least he clearly dominated Bouttier...decking him 3 times and practically rag dolling him in the process. Monzon-Griffith may have been an off night...but a winning off night lol.
I think there is a reason why Monzon and Hagler remained at MW for thier career and to a lesser degree why Hopkins remained there so long even after most of his contemporaries moved to Super Middle, LHW and beyond. I don’t think it is a knock on any of them, just that they all found a niche where they could excel and the need or desire to test themselves on another playing field was not as desirable as continuing thier dominance? In thier current one. Now Hops did ultimately move up but not IMO with the design of being great but recognizing he had accomplished all he could at MW and carefully (not a knock) selected opportunity where he could still flourish in a heavier division. I think Monzon and to a lesser degree Hagler could have done the same. Like Hops they could move to SMW/LHW and beat some decent names, but not achieve greatness in those divisions. Apparently it was not worth it for them to risk it (again not meant as a knock). I am fairly certain Monzon could have beaten some decent scalps at LHW, but don’t think Conteh would have been his choice. I know some think Conteh is overrated and that should be a separate thread if so...Although I find Monzon much greater than Conteh I don’t see him winning H2H at LHW
I dont hold it against Monzon or Hagler for not moving up. Why should they. They were middleweights who were comfortable and disciplined enough to stay at the weight. If anything I give them credit. Most fighters as they get older lose the drive and discipline they had in there younger years and dont want to stay fit in between fights and put themselves through the same kind of tough training camp. These guys did and I respect that more than the bull#### catch weight bouts and all that other made up nonsense that's been going on these past ten odd yrs. No I dont hold it against them at all.
