I'm not seeing the relevance of mentioning Italians fighting in the civil war.
Would it be just as relevant to mention Marciano was court martialed ,imprisoned ,and dishonourably discharged on his return from the UK, and subsequently never went overseas to a theatre of war?
It really doesn't have anything to do with his abilities as a fighter.
No more that Ray Robinson's faked fall, blackout, and amnesia, which enabled him to avoid overseas service and subsequently allowed him to be discharged from the Army.

My point was Italians, Jews, blacks & Latins were not privileged in the USA - they had to fight each other with no color line - Marciano's ability's power, stamina, workrate, heart, intelligence are not an issue or a question - To say that Marciano was given special treatment because he was white is BS -

Johnson-Jeffries- Tunney- Dempsey and all before them did not have to fight the best of their times because of the color line - Johnson was black but used his privilege as Champion Just as fighters after Ali could hide behind split titles -various organizations, and not unify the title or fight the dangerous guys of their era's - Larry Holmes did this - If there was one Champ or one set of rating's things may have been different - other co-champs never unified - not always the fighters fault but should be noted.

Marciano was sole Champ and fought 5 blacks out of 7 title fights and he also fought 5 #1 contenders out of 6 title defenses - I don't see any white privilege in Marciano's career
