Part of the spruking for the Contender Series is about the 'personalities' involved, and their interaction in the Big Brother-like house that they'll be staying in. That's why they've chosen odd-balls like Sonny Michael Angelo (even though he has claims ability-wise as well).

Whether Pittman has enough 'personality' I don't know, but you'd think they could have found a spot for someone of his ability amongst the 14 contenders. Surely they don't all have to be whacko like the Jungle Lord!

Something fishy there IMO - but who's to blame - who knows.

It's reality tv. From what I can gather this is a half boxing half soap opera I seen the first contender with different boxers with different backgrounds this will probably be much like that.Sonni with his troubled background and hamden with his middle eastern / muslim background wearing his free Palestine pants,Shannon Taylor the Anglo who had a drug addiction and found god who else is there Oganov big punching russian who probably has and interesting story and junior talipeau who use to post here I think he is still unbeaten he is young and has a good boxing style maybe lacks a little power.Out of all of these I dont think any can beat Mundine where as they may think Pittman has a chance and his background maybe a little to ordinary and boring for a tv show like this.So much for the Geale fight being his last in Australia.
You can bet your bottom dollar SMA will be fighting Taylor and it will be billed as a grudge match after the headbutt DQ in their fight.

Yeah, that was the impression I was getting.

Surely there's room amongst a field of 14, that already has token examples of most 'out-there' demographics, for a normal guy who can fight, like Pittman. If nothing else it'd provide a contrast to the others.

But then again perhaps someone is worried he'd win it, or at least spoil the script.

  6. I was disapointed not to see Bika do anything with his Contender win, a fight with Mundine would have been a natural event I thought...

Its disgraceful to see my boy Pittman not selected, he's an obvious pick something like this a has a great future in the sport.

    How's this for a prediction or two;

    1) Within the next fortnight Anthony Mundine will announce his next fight with a more than worthy opponent.

    2) IrnBruMan, after many sleepness nights will decide to have his first prostate examination from his fat fisted local G.P. It will be there that he;ll discover his long, lost, childhood pet canary's skeletal remains.... :ass

OK slightly old news now but worth a read:

Jamie Pittman signs deal after being snubbed by Mundine

from the Daily Telegraph July 8 - by Paul Kent

TWO days after being denied the chance to fight Anthony Mundine because he was not a "personality" that would work for his television show, Australia's best middleweight Jamie Pittman has signed with Superboxer.

Pittman will make his debut on Superboxer's second fight card in Melbourne next week after the show debuts on Channel 10's One HD tomorrow night.

Pittman's problem working for the Mundine show, based on The Contender, with the winner getting to fight Mundine, is a simple one: he would win the fight.

His frustrations were eased when promoter Fidel Tukel put the Superboxer deal together with a goal to deliver Pittman a world title fight next year. Pittman's trainer Dean Singleton said it gave his fighter fresh hope.

It sounds like you are seeking an endorsement on Mundine here Ash?

Mundine is a brilliant all-round athlete who's done well in both NRL and boxing. Recieved good genes from his old man and has used them - that's the upside.

    However...

The reason people with the slightest bit of boxing nouse dislike Mundine is because he promises the world (repeatedly, over and over and over!) and fails to deliver on it! If he suddenly stepped up and delivered even a portion of what he promises, he'd start getting some respect.

Likewise, if Mundine toned down his absolutely outlandish promises to the point that they even vaguely resembled his reality, he'd start getting some respect.

    ...simple as that really Ash.

Mundine would embarrass Pittman with his skills as he would all of the fighters picked to appear in the contender tv show.

Still just can't see how Pittman didn't get a gig in the Aussie Contender series!

Apparently Kurt Barham (5 wins from 5) was offered a spot and declined it - no disrespect, but Kurt who?

Perhaps if Pittman quickly develops a drug problem or something left-field that might make him more 'interesting' or 'relatable' to viewers he'll get a gig.

Or, conspiracy theory, is it that he fights the wrong way around? Noticeable that all the other fighters are orthodox! Perhaps they are concerned about the prospect of a lefty with ability?

Another contentious issue surely is the 'prize' - said to be a $250,000 match-up with Mundine for his IBO title. Not sure it's 'his' title to defend anymore? Not til he fights Geale again anyway.

...it leaves Victor Oganov, Ben McCulloch, Shannan Taylor, Pradeep Singh, Daniel Lovett, Tyrone Tongia, Nader Hamdan, Junior Talipeau, Peter Mitrevski, Israel Kani, Kane McKay, S. Michael Angelo, Les Piper and Luke Moloney to fight it out.
