Since another thread offended a lot of people and threw around words like "cowardly", I decided to create this less controversial version. Mental toughness is such a large part of boxing that I thought we should examine the guys who aren't at the absolute tip of the toughness bell curve. If nothing else, we should do it for comparison purposes. I acknowledge that boxers are much braver than the vast majority of the general population. Their mental strength still varies, though. Some tend to freeze up and run a bit more often, while guys like Frazier try to outslug the hardest puncher of all time. After. Six. Knockdowns. So...given that they're all pretty brave folks, which ones managed to get near the top with less mental strength / willpower / bravery / whatever you want to call it than their peers?
If you getting mad over someone calling a boxer "cowardly", then you`d probably kill me for some of the **** I`ve wanted ask.
Meh. Personally, it didn't give me any emotional reaction one way or the other. It did annoy a lot of other people, though. I still wanted to discuss something similar, so I posted this thread.
Bob Fitzsimmons was not a "puncher". Punching implies some level of damage short of decapitation. Fitz was a blacksmith who occasionally entered the ring to get a break from beating steel into shape with his bare fists. I was clearly referring to Frazier's sparring sessions with Ron Lyle.
Zab Judah qualifies whenever he doesn't have a title Victor Ortiz qualifies whenever he doesn't have a title Kermit Cintron Andrew Golota
Agreed. I'd add in Oakland Billy Smith. He had some hilarious incidents and his justifications were even better. [Shameless plug...] Details will be in Part 6 of "The Beast of Stillman's Gym."
Even if this is tongue in cheek, it's well-put. Two cents worth: Some posters [ahem] were wringing their hands over the use of the word "cowards" in the earlier thread. Other posters are wringing their hands on this thread over the problems with the use of the word "cowards" in the earlier thread. I wonder if some of the latter would have a problem if the earlier thread used the word "pu*sies" instead of "cowards."
yeah, it's funny how "lazy", "mentally weak", "lacking heart" and even "disgraceful" are considered wholly acceptable adjectives to describe boxers on their worst nights, but if anyone dares to mention the C-word then a load of confused pompous guardians of justice declare a moral panic.
