The harsh reality equates to the latter.

The answer is still Klitschko, even with the loss tonight.

Holmes would never lose to Fury that badly. Wlad was really exposed for his boxing ability, if he doesnt have the height or reach advantage, he cant fight coming forward against a guy with good boxing skills and defense.

Holmes' end of dominant years came earlier - in his 1st Spinks fight.

Holmes was past it for 2 years prior to Spinks - Witherspoon and Williams fights are the evidence.

Wlad looked past it, too. In Povetkin, Pulev (moments) and Jennings fights, and then he lost to Fury. Leapai was a bum.

In both fighters' reigns it was evident they are going to lose rather sooner than later.

Holmes made very good comeback though in his 40's, beating Mercer at 42 and nearly beating McCall at 45.

Never really that simple. We've seen many occasions where a fighter does more damage to an opponent with a solid chin than one with a weaker chin. Got to take into account how a fighter will fight a certain opponent.

Haye was extremely defensive against Wlad, to the point where it came at a huge detriment to his offense. The guy repeatedly flopped around and fell to the floor.

Spinks didn't do that, even against Tyson, he was intimidated and simply got his ass kicked against a bigger, stronger, faster, natural heavyweight. Spinks didn't fight super defensive.

Spinks was light years better in class than the immensely overrated Haye, and would most likely give a better effort to actually win the fight, and put himself in harms way in doing so.

He was one of the best LHWs ever, an ATG (possibly the most underrated fighter ever among casual fans due to the Tyson massacre), but merely a good HW. Too small to beat too many quality HWs. Especially someone as big, powerful, and good with distance and using size as Wlad.

How does the Fury loss affect things? Or does it?

    Fury is his Spinks

I believe Wlad would have won the rematch just as Ali did as well.

AJ/Klitschko is directly comparable to Tyson/Holmes. I don't think it's embarrassing for an old champion to get knocked out. If you think about it, that type of thinking keeps us from seeing a lot of fights then we complain about ducking. It's rare that fighters retire on their own terms. One last attempt of greatness should be celebrated I think.

First :bump: since the loss to Joshua last year...not that it has any bearing on the original thread subject, as it doesn't count as part of Wlad's reign and thus neither the result nor his performance ought to count for nor against him - but it does provide a further buffer against the reign-ending Fury loss, to put the latter more squarely in perspective.

Shame the original poll was lost in the forum software upgrade.

It would be interesting to see who lost less rounds during their reigns.
