spar a guy who knows what hes doing, usually guys with more experience will go at a proper pace for you, be it slower or faster, unless they dont like you or something.

    Smartass.

I understand situational sparring, but you need to be with a partner who is good and knows what they're doing too (kinda like sex). Otherwise it won't work. For example, we used to do drills where we would only infight, right up on each other. Needless to say, that is one of my weak points, and my sparring partner, Zack, was quite good at it. My natural tendency was of course to step out and start fighting from range again; use my height as much as I can. You have to really bite down, focus, and be with someone who's not going to take advantage and kill you by being way better at what you're practicing than you are.

I was actually more serious than it seemed. Sparring is controlled by definition, the amount of control depends on the goal of the sparring session and the people involved. Sometimes we get assignments, like jab only, fight in the distance, fight up close, against the ropes, etc. Sometimes there is little control, but you'd still hold back if you connect a few times in a row and you would not knock someone out either. Unless you're an ******* that is.

Thanks. I've boxed as a hobby for a long time, considering stepping it up and competing when this semester is over, can't afford a gym right now because of school, so I'll be using my dad and girlfriend as training tools. Both of them have some experience. I also have tons of protective equipment that I've acquired through the years.

I love doing defense-only sparring drills, usually against female boxers or noobs. You get to work on defensive maneuvers with only minimal risks, while letting your partner work on specific techniques or punch combinations. It's a win-win, and sometimes I ask the girls for a date later.

unfortunately at the gyms i have trained at they only do jabs, left hand or all in. i think it should be more specific

eg one round work on defense only, head movement, blocking etc
next round work on defense only by using footwork and lateral movement
    one round jabs only
    one round infighting
    one round body shots
