I distinctly recall yelling for a stand up most of the fight and i appreciate ground work. I will have to revisit this fight as well and watch for what Musasi was doing off his back. i also recall Mousasi having a very good round two where he took Lawal's back right at the end then Big John McCuckthy let Lawal lay n' pray the last three rounds.
Yeah Mousasi clearly won that round, he displayed some of the most effective striking out of the guard seen in a high level mma contest. As for lay and pray, i.e. holding opponent down, not looking to advance position or strike to kill time, there wasn't much at all of that in the fight. Either Mousasi was beating him up off his back and staying active in the open guard or Lawal backing out of the guard, working to advance position and occasionally throwing punches. There was a point in round 4 where the action ceased, McCarthy stood them up.
O.K. cool; I will take your word for it. I guess me rooting for Mousasi and knowing he was not getting a decision playing from his back made my memory focus more on wanting them stood and ignoring Mousasi's guard striking knowing full well the judges would idiscount it.
Bas Rutten vs Kevin Randleman @ UFC 20 Tim Catalfo 1-0 Randleman Skip Hall 1-0 Rutten Dan Miragliotta 1-0 Rutten First 5 minutes- Randleman takedown, passes guard into side control, lands severe GnP on Rutten. McCarthy halts the action to have Bas’ battered face checked out by a ring doctor. Action resumes. Next 5- Randleman catches a leg kick and takes Rutten down into full guard, Rutten tries to push his head away to create space. Randleman not doing much on top and neither is Rutten. Rutten pushes his head away and lands a couple shots to the body and head. Randleman immediately responds with his own punches. Rutten attempts an armbar but it’s quickly defended and Randleman advances to side control. Randleman works for a head and arm choke, but it’s defended and Bas gets back into half guard. next 5- Bas lands some chopping right hands while in half guard, Randleman postures up and lands a few good punches. Rutten gets into full guard, Rutten lands a grazing backfist. The action is halted again for the doctor to check if Rutten can continue, his face is badly busted up. Action resumes, Rutten misses a front kick, Randleman takes him down again. Rutten lands a couple slaps to the side of Randleman's head. He creates space and lands some short hooks on Randleman. The rest- Rutten landing some slaps to the back of Randleman’s head. Randleman lands a cuffing elbow. Rutten lands some hard elbows to top of Randleman's head. Rutten lands a weird double elbow to the shoulders. Not much is happening. Start of 1st OT. Rutten misses a roundhouse kick. Both men very tentative on the feet. Bas throws a low kick and is taken down. Bas attempts an armbar, Randleman defends. Rutten holds Kev’s head and lands a couple punches. 2nd OT starts, Rutten throws a punch, it misses and Randleman takes him down. Rutten lands some weak cuffing punches, Kev postures up and lands a punch. Fight ends. Rutten wins SD I’ve watched this fight several times over the years and I can’t for the life of me understand how someone could score it for Rutten. He did land slightly more strikes off his back but most of them were weak and not effective. He was throughly outgrappled, out sig striked, outdamaged and positionally controlled for the vast majority of the fight. Terrible decision.
I always thought Randleman nicked it tbh but Rutten fought well here. I remember I wasn't outraged when Bas got the nod, I also wasn't thrilled.
Good shout outs! Totally forgot about those two. I remember Torres/Johnson was another controversial one.
Going back almost 10 years... Daley/Masvidal was pretty controversial from what I've heard, never actually sat down and watched that one though.
won every second of the fight but the last 10 seconds what about iaquinta, palomino, melendez, larkin.
Thought he definitely beat Iaquinta... Palomino I haven't seen, Melendez remember giving to Gil and Larkin just narrowly managed to outpoint him with his kickboxing(close but no robbery)
and larkin intensionally poked jorge in the eye no points which is silly because it def affected the fight. Ill post a nice pic of melendez face for you after the fight. He did not win that fight.
Superficial damage doesn't always tell the story of a fight dude. Come on... That's casual fan logic.
