Neither is it mine and that includes Winky's punches that where being met with a block or parry.

Sweet Pea has a few, JLR 1, WR 1 and 2, Chavez and de la Hoya (which I already have a final score for).

Great idea for a series of threads. I love Winky, he's never got the credit he deserves. Think I had him edging this but need to give it another watch.

He was an astonishing fighter and I wouldn't take many people at 154 to beat him. Had he got the decision against Taylor (2005?) (which I think he deserved although I'll make a future thread about it) he should have become P4P number 1.

Its a genuinely good fight, very exciting, great skills on show. I don't think there is a fighter under 25, maybe even 28 who has it in him to beat a seasoned fighter as good as Winky in the sort of test that Vargas did.

    Very good fight.
    Highly underrated.
I watched it only once, and I scored it for vargas, but it could've gone either way, there were just too many close rounds.

Wright had a great style, he's one of a few Boxers I started watching before I became a Huge Boxing

This is such an underrated fight. Little did we know it represented Vargas at his best (along with the Ike Quartey fight). I always thought El Feroz pulled it out in the end and outworked Winky.

Fernando pulled it out in the championship rounds.

Winky lost a few of his fights by being surprisingly good then being outhustled in the championship rounds. He made a career of crying robbery for his inability to finish strong.

How ? Vargas won only the 10th and 12th rounds.
I had a draw, giving every close rounds to Vargas.

I thought Winky never really had any problems in the "championship rounds". Against Vargas he just wasn't able to outwork Vargas who went crazy in rounds 10, 11 and 12. In 11 he was able to temper Vargas's attack with his defence and straight punches. Enough to stop a reinvigorated Vargas winning the round but not quite enough to win it.

I can't quite remember what his corner said to him, but I think they told him he had it in the bag after round 9 or so, which was when Vargas's corner told him to go for broke because it was really close. He might be able to proportion some blame to his corner for not bucking his ideas up enough in 10 and 12.

Alright, home from work, here's my scorecard:

Rd 1: Vargas 10-9, good body work and more work in general.
Rd 2: Wright 10-9, Winky being the bully 100% here, chopping right hooks and body work.
Rd 3: Wright 10-9, incredibly close round, Vargas' shots going off the arms/gloves a bit more.
Rd 4: Vargas 10-9, Vargas shows off the big difference in power this round.
Rd 5: Wright 10-9, Wright countering/moving well this round, pretty clear round.
Rd 6: Wright 10-9, Wright really put it on Vargas this round, good clean shots.
Rd 7: Vargas 10-9, Starts off well and finishes well with big shots, wink carrying the action in the middle. Great give and take in this fight.
Rd 8: Wright 10-9, Precision jabs from Wink in this round. Pounding away at Vargas
Rd 9: Wright 10-9, Man, he blasted Vargas with some hard shots in that round, stunned him slightly when he knocked his mouthpiece out with a 1-2.
Rd 10: Vargas 10-9, Really good rally at the end of the round by Vargas, busting through Wink's guard most of the round.
Rd 11: Wright 10-9, Winky stems the tide here, outpunches Vargas.
Rd 12: Vargas 10-9, Vargas was an absolute madman this round, nonstop punching, pressure, and aggression.

    115-113 Wright.

God damn I love this fight, what a great rewatch. Winky took it to Vargas unexpectedly and was really hurting him at points, combine that with good defense as is typical of Wink and I think you've got a close but clear win for Ronald.

That's my opinion at least. :deal:thumbsup:hat

Nice score-card and look at how each round went. Looking at both mine and your scorecards prove what a back and forth this fight was, not a war as such but technical excitement. Two extraordinary talents on show, one would go onto become one of the pre-eminent fighters of the 2000's while the other would run into styles and fighters that would spell the end of him. A great fight for both mens legacy.
