I would agree if you said l.holmes....but you said the 30s....a whole level fighters operating at world level would be considered club fighters now.

    Not cool

Cockell had a water retention problem & went up in weight from lightheavy but he was a tough & skilled fighter.

Rocky is the best ever 190lb fighter imo. He could throw 100 power punches a round & could still be throwing shots after 15.

    Club fighters? **** off.

I just look at someone like Ezzard Charles, fought around the same time as Marciano, before even. Then Chad Dawson, a guy who uses the most advanced technology in his training, modern nutrition and everything. He's also a top 3-5 Light Heavyweight.

Then I wonder who would win. Charles 10 times out of 10. He's also beat every single active Light heavyweight today.

    That's modern nutrition for ya.

No, most of the old guys were not 'club fighters' today.

Cockell wasn't all that. Maybe show Marciano against Charles, Moore or Walcott? Three supremely talented fighters.

Rocky looks like a club fighter?! Pathetic.

It is unquestionable that there have been CHANGES in boxing. Whether that has helped fighters or not is entirely another discussion. As pointed out in another thread, Joe Calzaghe adopted pretty much an ancient training resume which allowed him to throw 120 punches a round. Roy jones is another. And when he changed to modern techniques, it can be argued his ability level dropped.

Henry Armstrong punched for 3 minutes a round, for 15 rounds, every month, WITHOUT all these training methods. Now, we have guys like Jean Pascal who look physically great, but gas in about 4 rounds. Is this due to added nutrition?

I apologise for stealing JPab's examples, but they really were spot on in this case.

As for skill levels, go watch Kid Chocolate vs Tony Canzoneri and see how skilled they were. Watch Joe Louis put together the greatest combination punches in HW history. Watch a shot Jimmy Wilde come back after a two year lay off and fight the truly great Pancho Villa in a great exhibition of power punching and jabbing alike and tell me they would be club fighters today

Watch Kid Gavilan Vs Gil Turner. Harold Johnson Vs Ezzard Charles. Fighting Harada Vs Pone Kingpetch. Watch the uppercut Joe Gans threw. Watch Sam Langford Vs Joe Jeanette.

Boxing has regressed IMO. Fighting is not sprinting. It's debatable whether developing understanding of fast twitch fibres makes you a better fighter, and I think 24 hour rehydration periods certainly encourage a depleted fighter.

Fighters fight less regularly, and rarely fight the best. More divisions equals less depth in single divisions.

And seriously, if we're criticising Don Cockell, watch Sam Peter for ****s sake.

your word playing here.......never said everyone....you mentioned the 1930s guy as being far better than today....i showed arturo godoy...then showed a fight from one of rocky world title fights....it was poor.

Sonny Liston was far better, stronger, faster...and more technical. He was only a few years later...so stop word playing flea....under modern rules walcott would have won a 12 round decision the first time.

When I watched this recent world title fight I marveled at how modern nutrition & training techniques had produced these 2 outstanding warriors.
