Cheers for that, certainly a lot of work was put into it, probobly the most thorough piece on Kid Chocolate i've read, props to the author. An interesting little tidbit in there that a Chilean, of all other nationalities, played such a big part in the beginnings of boxing in Cuba. Sad to here the state he ended up in. Has anyone seen the documentry mentioned in the article?
Good article. :good I've always rated Kid Chocolate pretty high. From a British perspective, I'd overlooked Berg's win over him for ages - it was only recently that I realized Berg was the first man to defeat him.
On more than one occasion, Pincho Gutierrez said that Kid picked up his slick and relatively sophisticated moves by watching Benny Leonard vs. Lew Tendler, Joe Gans vs. Battling Nelson and Jack Johnson vs. Jim Jeffries fights over and over again, until he was able to emulate the sequences perfectly. According to the Kid, studying the masters made him the fighter he'd become. Very interesting.
