Just watched this for the first time today, what a fight. Never watched it until now, and was really surprised at how competitive it was. Very short fight, but action the whole time.

Cooney landed a collosal left hook at the end of the first that had Foreman pretty shook up. I'd say it was definitely the most Foreman was ever hurt in his comeback by a single punch, which is saying something considering he fought the likes of Shannon Briggs, Alex Stewart, and Tommy Morrison. Cooney could wack and despite the huge layoff was still a dangerous hombre that would of won by KO here had Foreman not been incredibly durable.

How do people see a prime Cooney (say the one from the Norton fight) doing against this George? Same result?

Foreman didn't appear all that hurt to me. The hook Cooney landed was a short inside hook thrown without a lot of leverage; it just caught Foreman unawares and stunned him a bit. But I think Foreman was hit much harder by Morrison and Holyfield. A prime Cooney probably would have overpowered Foreman though. The Cooney of '82 had more stamina, better workrate, and was not as psychologically mixed up.

Goerge once said that Cooney landed a left hook to the elbow which send like what seemed a massive jolt of electricity through George's entire body :bbb

Foreman himself has said that Cooney hit him as hard with one punch as he had ever been hit.

Of course, he is known for telling the same story several different ways, and more often says it was ron Lyle.

 That's George. But I've heard him say both in the same sentence too, as the guys that hit him the hardest. I also heard him say that if Cooney knew how hurt he was he may've been stopped, but again, George is George.

He also said Lennox lewis was the greatest heavyweight champion of all time.

George says a lot of things.

As for the fight, it was a good fight, but Cooney just couldn't take George's punishment.

A prime Cooney beats this version of George. A bout with both men in their primes would end up just like the 1990 bout. George knocks Cooney out early.

I thought the accuracy of George's volleys was remarkable .

Yeah, Foreman really looked destructive in finishing him off. It actually reminds me of Sonny Liston.

I'm sort of surprised a few people picked a prime Cooney to take out comeback George. Cooney has two major things going against him in this matchup, no matter what version it is imo,

    1. Durability
    2. Lack of physical strength.

He would always be in serious trouble whenever Foreman landed on him. I get the feeling that Holmes carried Cooney after hurting him badly early on, plus you have the Spinks debacle. Cooney was also very weak for his size and would always get seriously bullied and pushed around by Big George.

    Interesting to think about.

Foreman was not shook at all by Cooney. Off balance, maybe, but not shook. Any version of Foreman knocks out any version of Cooney.
Foreman is a nice guy when referring to other fighters and he was in
    no trouble from Cooney.

Because more then a few posters number three heavyweight of all time is so terribly far from that that it's a ridiculously asinine comment.

Ya, George saying that Lewis is the greatest of all time is probably closer to the truth than 99% of what he usually says in front of the camera.

He also had the balls/foresight to say it before Lewis actually retired and was appreciated 50 times more then he ever was when he was active.

I love this finish. Foreman showed great power, and a bit more speed and accuracy for this comeback first compared to the others. He retained a good sharpness.
