OMG Gerrie Coetzee would put him in a home! Monies on Dokes, Spinks was a light heavy, And 5-0 ko'd Cooney with insulting ease! Bore by the shore! So gotta go with Leon ! Cooney like Bobick never beat anyone, and Bobick beat better, Norton, Young and Lyle were all done, all would have beat him in their prime! Greg Page at his best beats him EZ. Foreman would bomb him anytime in his career! and did. Cooney hit Holmes with the hardest low blow he could muster, That bought him about 3 xtra rounds, that was a DQ shot! Where was Mills Lane?
I don't think you have right person because I have repeatedly picked Marciano to beat anyone under 200 pounds, as in probably 2 dozen times on this board... only recently was I ever so slightly swayed by Holyfield and sometimes Dempsey gets consideration.
Cooney had a great left hook but that's not the punch that bothered Dempsey. He'd duck under it and counter punch the hell out of Cooney. Plus really the only guy to bother Dempsey was Tunney and Tunney was the anti-Cooney in terms of style.
Gotta tell you, Cooney s loonies are a determined lot. While the hero never showed up to defend his honor in the ring or to actually EARN a megabuck fight, his faithful ALWAYS show up to defend him and present his case as the most dangerous fighter ever. And why he ko's ANYONE in heavy history. They have more heart for a fight than the punk Cooney ever had. Notice how every thread starts, "the Cooney of the Holmes fight"..Jeez, gotta tell you folks, he lost badly. It was not close. Against Spinks and George, who Gerry thought he was cherry picking for easy money, he showed the skill and toughness of wet toilet paper. I especially love the goofball, "boy did I f$+k up and is this going to hurt" smile when he first gets knocked down. PRICELESS. For those who weren't there, Cooney was the joke of boxing in the 80s. But I will from now on only write about him as a killer, since that seems to be the revisionist way.
Again, I have consistently picked Marciano over any sub-200 pound fighter and I have done this dozens of times and defended this choice each time. It's probably been my most consistent stance in the past decade. Either I was pulling someone's leg or you just have the wrong person.
