Walcott also knocked out 6'4 225lb Johnny Shkor with "one flush right hand to the jaw". It took 5 minutes to revive Shkor. Walcott knocked out the dangerous swede 6'3 210lb Olle Tandberg in 1949. Tandberg had never been stopped before. Here is the Pic http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ec/Tandberg-walcott.jpg Here is an article on the bout http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...LwhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=mZwFAAAAIBAJ&pg=2175,4511773 Tandberg has scored a huge upset over top ranked heavyweight contender Joe Baksi, ruining a Baksi title shot against Joe Louis.
Walcott and rather easily, he bewitches , bewilders, and baffles the straight up Cooney and may take him out late. Walcott did well with tall guys.
BTW, complete and well put! My only concern would be Walcotts tendency to slug when he should run. One of my favorites to watch whose record can be misleading.
I don't know what his true size was as reported stats differ depending on the source. But Boxrec actually has Ten Hoff listed at 6'3", 219 lbs. Though he was undefeated, he also had 3 draws and his opposition doesn't look too stellar on paper. Johnny Shkor was a journeyman level opponent.
Hoff was 6'5 if you look at the film of both standing you can kind of see a large height difference, I believe Walcott was a bit over 6" where they usually say he was listed but he was not quite as short as the 6" Charles next to Louis. In this clip against Hoff you can see about 5 inches height difference but I guess the point is he could find the range against a tall man but I dont think anyone doubts that. Cooney had a great left hook but once a savvy fighter figures out he was one handed and could be hit a game plan would follow
What you say may be true. But some on here have made the claim that Joe Walcott would " easily" outbox Gerry Cooney. A prime Larry Holmes didn't even have an easy time doing this. That fight went for 13 rounds and Larry had to dig deep at times to win that match, even took some lumps along the way. This was one of the division's greatest boxers in history. And the fight happened when Cooney entered the ring only having seen 54 seconds of ring time within a 20 month period.
you are right and IMO Cooney could have been so much better prepared to fight Holmes ( a Tex Cobb fight as a warm up to go 10 rounds instead of the 8 rounds which was the most Gerry had fought may have helped Gerry both mentally and physically) but if we are going on the best Gerry I am thinking of the Gerry that fought Holmes and I dont think Walcott has a walk in the park win, with the knowledge that Gerry had one arm and had only gone 8rds my thinking is a crafty guy like Walcott would look to take Cooney into the later stage of the fight and Walcott hit harder with either hand than Holmes and moved at least as well but even JJW would have to be cautious and be extremely careful not to get hooked I am a believer that Cooney had talent and could have been brought up better for quality and not the quantity$ that the WACKO twins were looking for
Cooney was never a finished product. The Cooney of 1981 would have a punchers chance but to be honest JJW is a nightmare matchup for him. He simply was not co-ordinated enough to deal with JJW's feints and positioning, leaving him exposed to hard counters and leads much like the Spinks fight (although that was Gerry at his worst). JJW by stoppage around the 4-6th round. Bad match up style wise for Gerry.
