Cooney takes on these former British Champs, how do you think it goes? Henry Cooper Joe Bugner Frank Bruno Gary Mason Derek Chisora David Price All fights are scheduled for 12 rounds
1. I like Cooper but i don't think he can close the distance on Cooney. Cooney by stoppage in a highly exciting fight. 2. I am going with Cooney. Bugner lost to both Shavers and Lyle and while Bugner had the potential to outpoint Cooney, i think Cooney catches him at some point. 3. 50-50. Whoever lands a big shot first. Neither guy can recover well. 4. Cooney stops Mason early. 5. Chisora has been stopped before and also by a left hook vs Haye. IMO Cooney catches him with a big left hook and ko's him more brutally than Haye did. 6. Cooney by early stoppage. Price is too fragile despite his power.
Cooney would absolutely batter David Price and very early. Frank Bruno would be the toughest opponent off the list though.
The prime Cooney was lean and hungry. I was always impressed by the quality of his punching.Like Ruddock he was reliant on the left but he had a right. He damaged Jimmy Young badly with it. He also had incredible almost 70s Foreman like footwork and ability to create angles with body swerves. Cooney was not proffesional . I wont go into his handlers inexplicably protecting him after he became number 1 contender by putting him on the shelf rather than winnable tune ups againt contenders prior to fighting Holmes. He fought Holmes in a rusty state. Cooney pretty much continued the trend for 8 years thereafter....for all intents and purposes his career ended in 1982. The Spinks fight or his utter lack of fight ...that loss really demeans and denigrates him so he is considered less than he actually was. Ironically the even more rusty Cooney who fought Foreman was lean and hungry and fought well before suddenly folding like an accordion .I sometimes wonder if that Cooney had embarked on a comeback George style run in 1990 & 1991 with Gil Clancy in his corner stayed clear of drink and drugs what he could have achieved. Regardless this is how I see a peak Cooney faring in these prime 4 prime matchups: Henry Cooper Gerry is far too big and powerful and turns Cooper into a bloody mess in 6. Joe Bugner Joe has the ability to outbox Cooney but will he have the will? Ali forced him into a shell while Frazier and Lyle met a fired up adversary. I think Bugner wins a 12 round decision. Frank Bruno I think its a tough even fight after 6 but Gerry hits Frank who freezes and Gerry completes a vicious knockout with Bruno out for the ten count after taking shot after shot . Gary Mason This is a harder fight and Cooney wins a ten rounder on points. Derek Chisora I honestly don't think this kind of modern heavyweight is oglf the quality of Cooney. Cooney easily outpoints over 10. David Price: A knockout in 3 over Price
I disagree with you about Mason. Yes he didn't fight alot of top opposition but he did seem to possess a good chin he took Lewis's best punches just fine and it was an old eye injury that forced the stoppage. I don't think Mason gets stopped early by Cooney quite honestly.
Yes I think Mason had a pretty good Chin. Lewis certainly banged some good shots off of it. I don't see Cooney stopping him, at least not early.
Good questions,Fergy. I too believe that providing he's up for it and boxes to the best of his ability,Joe Bugner would have been capable of outboxing Gerry and getting a decsion over him. Anything less that his best, though, would see him get outworked by Cooney but it would still be a distance fight with a Gerry victory. Bruno/Cooney - Frank is ahead after six or seven rounds but after that Cooney catches him with a big punch which makes Frank freeze. The writing would be on the wall after that. Pearce get bombed out early. Cooper - Henry puts up a gallant fight in a short and sweet contest but Gerry stops him on cuts or maybe scores multiple knockdowns. Mason and Chisora get soundly outpointed.
I agree. I’d factor Cooney to run a sweep in one-offs but that’s a horrible schedule if he’s running it back to back, especially with Cooney’s inconsistency. He’d drop the ball somewhere.
Agree. And the reason I’m skeptical about a Cooney vs Chisora fight is that Chisora has been well accustomed to fighting big men his whole career. He took Fury the distance. Was robbed against Helenius. Knocked out Malik Scott. Possibly robbed against Parker. Beat Otto Wallin. Chisora was no world beater by any means but he was a damn tough dude and good fighter
