It was more like 10 seconds, at the very least it was six. Not much extra and the delay didn't make a difference to the eventual outcome but the point is that Dundee sought to have more time due to Clay not knowing where he was (hence the attempted 'delay' and smelling salts to revive him).
Harry Carpenter once said he had timed the interval and it was 65 (or 67) seconds. Whatever happened, Henry did very nicely thank you out of that fight.
June 1966 'A Very Nice Pay-day For Clay' Muhammad (Cassius Clay) Ali received $350,000 for his recent bout with Henry Cooper. Over 46,000 fans witnessed the Heavyweight Tiff. Henry Cooper pulled in a fair $112,000. Henry Cooper is hopeful of a rematch, as he claimed he was pulled into Ali, who in turn butted him. Before discussion of a rematch, Muhammad Ali will first visit the calm country of Cairo, Egypt.
In their first scrap, given a 10-pt. must scoring, Cooper DID lead 39-37...or 38-37 if you give Clay the 3rd. I didn't have the rematch that close, Ali was playing a bit and was the champ so...those scorecards are going to go his way in those iffy rounds. Interesting that 'enry was virtually unmarked in the rematch until that straight right bomb in the sixth...
According to the report in "Boxing Illustrated" the referee had the second fight even at time of the stoppage. Woller
If Ol 'Enry had landed that left hook 10-seconds earlier,,, It may have been Mr. Cooper in there versus Sonny Liston..........OUCH!!!
Ali got up like 2 seconds after he was hit and then took care of Cooper with ease. The 2nd fight as well.
Too bloody right people can exaggerate ! It's like the so called sparring sessions when every man and his dog was supposed to have knocked Muhammad out !
I was talking to an old boxing fan a couple of days ago, he said he sparred with Henry Cooper's brother Jim while in the British army (despite being a Welterweight & Jim being Heavyweight!). This guy a big Cooper fan, & he had been in person at the Ali-Cooper bout I in Wembley. I asked him if he thought Ali got any extra time in the corner after round 4, & he couldn't recall any excess time. He just said the crowd had been roaring with mass excitement from the knockdown & were very disapointed when the bell went in round 4 soon after Ali had gotten up (as most thought Cooper could've finished him with more time), so many people may have imagined that a couple of extra seconds between that round & the next as a lot longer than it actually was...
