Cooper ahead by a point in the first bout, but he got creamed and cut up in a single round. That round could almost be a two point round for Ali dominance even without the cut.

The rematch was dead even to me, but Ali wasn't fighting very hard. He stepped on the gas a bit, and Coopers face fell apart again.

There was about 5 seconds excess time in the first fight. The smelling salts are the controversial thing, in my eyes, though I don't think they were as necessary as it is assumed. Ali popped right up after being clipped. The torn glove giving Ali a ton of time is a myth.

It was 6 or 7 seconds. What is astonishing is that anyone that questions the time can just youtube and see for him/herself.Cooper used to exacerbate the problem by claiming it was like 2 minutes or something, but the fight is on Youtube for any and everyone to see with their own 2 eyes.

In the first bout, Henry Cooper was leading by '2' fraction points.

    Round 1,,,Cooper 1/4
    Round 2,,Clay 1/4
    Round 3,,Even
    Round 4 ,,Cooper 1/2

    Really 2-points.

So did Patterson in Ingo 1 (again and again). That doesn't necessarily mean you're not badly hurt.
Recall that Clay got up AGAIN a few seconds later (from his stool)
    because his bell WAS rung.

I will say that IMO boxing history was justly served with Ali's two victories over Cooper BUT...he was careless and got clocked big-time, fortunately at the end of the round, and dodged a major bullet that evening.

The bell and the smelling salts really helped clay out big time, but it wasnt a title fight after all. clay got two strokes of good luck away from home and salvaged certain disaster without the bell and salts.

with all that talent it just goes to show incredible luck plays a huge part for all champions.

Whats with all the 'ifs' and 'buts' and 'lucky' **** going on in this thread? Its there for all to see. Ali was too lax (his own fault), got caught a peach of a left hook, got up right away, went to his corner, came out and completely destroyed cooper. Why do people always want to look for things that arent there. Torn glove, 3hrs between rounds, ropes saved him, etc etc.....

Cooper should be thankful of this happening cos never have i seen one person dine out on a story for so long. I liked Cooper, but some of the **** hes claimed in fights is nothing short of bitterness and outright nonsense

without the bell and without the smelling salts to revive him it would be harder for ali to destroy cooper. It could posibly have been harder to continue.

all champions luck out in the face of certain disaster at some stage. peak ezzard charles was nearly stoped by that fitzy fitzpatrick guy and the peak Sugar ray robinson was also saved from disaster against artie lavine and jake lamotta. ali lucked out that one time..

"Angelo discovered my glove was busted, it took nearly a minute to replace. I believe a regular minute would have been enough but that extra minute gave me new vigour".

But Ali was brutally knocked down by Joe Frazier in the FOTC and got up and recovered well. When Cooper knocked him down,Ali got right back up,as he did against Frazier.Luck had absolutely NOTHING to do with it.People need to accept that and move on.It's as if Cooper and his fans are claiming that the bell and smelling salts are the reasons Cooper lost.

Your generalizing C; Cooper NEVER had a chance unless he landed his bomb at the start of the round. We just need to admit that, like many other individual/or team HOF icons, this was a time early on that a legend had to dodge a bullet...
    Clay...was...clocked...big time...

Its not the reason he lost, Its just that I am all for letting a lesser fighter have his moment because I am a genuine boxing fan and not a nut hugger.

artie lavine, fritzzie fitzpatric, Luis firpo, HENRY COOPER & stanley ketchel they all earned their moment, and good luck to them.

If you are offended by my post, then I apologize as I didn't mean any offense by it.:goodHowever,in all honesty, there are many, many posters on these boards that play the shoulda, woulda, coulda card concerning that fight. That's a fact and everyone knows it.Your point was meant to convey something else, but when even Cooper himself claims it was 2 minutes, and that's why he lost, then people need to be reminded of what really happened.
