Yeah, I agree with this. Rubin Carter stopped Emille Griffith in one, everytime a Griffith trhead comes up now Griffith will be bashed then ? **** happens. Didn't Archie Moore got stopped by Leonard Morrow in one too? My main tought while doing this was if he (Corbett) did have the ability to pull it off.
j,great point you make above, but you must understand S is a maverick poster who's forte is to stir the pot, and delves into the controversial at all times. Thus becoming relevant...Nice chap though...
It would take a great boxer to beat prime Dempsey. Tunney, Ali or Corbett may have been able to do the trick. All were tricky fast slick boxers.
Dempsy had trouble with speedy boxers. It wasn't only Meehan, he also drew with Miske when The St. Paul Thunderbolt was closest to his prime. Tunney another quick fighter had a field day with Dempsey, winning 19 of 20 rounds. A problem here is Dempsey didn't have many late round KO's and did not fight past 15 rounds. He's not like to catch Corbett quickly...because he couldn't with Meehan. In a shorter fight, Corbett could win a decsion
Apart from Tunney, who beat a ring rusty Dempsey, which speedy boxer beat a prime Dempsey? Carpentier Gibbons Fulton Miske Sharkey Levinsky :think
I can't see Corbett having much success against Dempsey. JD will pretty much walk through any offense that Corbett has and sooner rather than later he would lay him out for a nice snooze.
Once in the ring, Dempsey gets a look at Corbett in his leather thong, sees those white cheeks and gets lightheaded. Corbett takes advantage of the distracted Dempsey and lands a devastating uppercut on the swooning Jack. KO 1 Gentleman Jim. In the rematch, Dempsey demands boxing trunks in the contract. Corbett, losing his Sampson like power of exposed cheeks, gets blasted out in the 3rd round after an angry Dempsey deliberately punishes Jimbo for two and a half bloody rounds. KO 3 Dempsey.
Jack would get him fast imo. He would'nt give Corbett time to settle. For me I'd be surprised if JJC is still there after the 3rd!
Not saying Corbett couldn't win, but I don't like his chances when I consider Corbett's meeting with Tom Sharkey. Dempsey probably matching Sharkey (give or take a smidge) in speed, aggressiveness and ruggedness, a more effective puncher and better defense. A counter-argument would be the Tunney-Dempsey encounters.
Amazing that Corbett’s cheeky attire has transcended time, still solidly referenced some 127 years after his gay nineties, soft porn effort in Carson City, Nevada. Poor Ruby Robert, an unwitting participant in Corbett’s smut show. Jim knew EXACTLY what he was doing. They have a DAY for everything else - why not International Thong Day in honour of the true trail blazer who woked the world back in 1897? Though, the specific date in question would coincide with St Patrick’s Day - too easy, just wear a green thong. When Irish cheeks are glowing....
