I have become too busy to correct Mcvey's foolish posts outside of perhaps a weekend, but there is no proof of this happening, and Jeffries flat out denies this. Mcvey title says TKO'd not floored. The dolt might not know the difference. Author Adam Pollack, who McVey likes to quote when what he says is favorable to his agenda thinks this " TKO " never happened. " You could not hurt him, not even with an ax. " - Jim Corbett on Jeffries. Does this sound like a man who TKO'd him in sparring? I think not! PS: McVey, are you ever going to tell us what the purse was between Battling Jim and Jack Johnson? You said you knew. You're full of it as usual. I think replying less to your posts might lead to others correcting you instead of I.
You poor old fool. Might I suggest you re-arrange your lawn chair again and get some fresh air? The NY Times states say Smith had Johnson down and dazed to the point where his manager halted the 4 round ex match. That you dolt is a TKO. An alleged knockdown is not. And he never forget it, to quote Smith. Smith never received a title shot from Johnson even though he beat some of the guys Johnson gave title shots too. Gee, I wonder why? Maybe Smith was too good of a " white hope " for Johnson to risk his title against. I think so. From 1909-1914 Smith, Langford, Jeanette and McVey could be viewed as the top 4 contenders. Count the ducks. And let's not forget the running away to face Langford when Johnson signed a contract to meet him. Jack bolted in 1909 from Langford. By contrast Jeffries fought his top three contenders right away in Fitz, Sharkey and Corbett and did it in less than a two year span. That's how a champion is supported to act.
I AM QUOTING POLLACK HERE YOU MORON! The quote comes from his book Bob Fitzsimmons In the Ring And Out!page 350,Here it is AGAIN! "On February 27th 1897Corbett dropped and badly dazed Jeffries with a short right,Billy Woods replaced him".Witnesses to it were Charley White, Billy Woods and WW Naughton Editor of the Police Gazette. The event was published in the following papers. The Salt Lake Herald,The Rocky Mountain News,The News, The San Francisco Examiner, and The San Francisco Chronicle. You have made so much of Gun Boat Smth flooring Jack Johnson claiming it was a tko in an exhibition when it was nothing of the sort. For the record you cannot have a decision of any sort in a sparring session which is what the Johnson Smith affair was,and that is endorsed in a taped interview by Smith himself in March 1979 in his Brooklyn home. Klompton and myself have corrected you countless times on this ,but you still persist in posting this agenda driven lie. Now I've given the day ,the year, the place, and the witnesses of the knockdown of Jeffries by Corbett and the author of the book who, as everyone knows is noted for his exhaustive research. He says it happened and he wrote about it in the Fitzsimmons book and it can be found on page 350! Unlike you I provide primary sources for my quotes! Unlike you I am not a liar I make no silly claims about it being a tko in an exhibition,as I said about the title of the thread it is just "click bait ," it was a knockdown in sparring and Jeffries was badly dazed and substituted for the remainder of the sparring session. What has happened here is you have been hoist with your own petard . The irony of it is quite priceless! A compulsive liar has had his oft repeated lie come back to bite him in his ignorant ASS! I've provided you with the title of the book, the name of the author, and the page you can find Johnson's purse on. Buy the book and educate your ignorant bigoted self!
For your further information the NY Times did not have a reporter there they took their story from an AP wire service report and this has been pointed out to you before by Steve Klompton.GunBoat Smith himself made no such claim in his interview with Peter Heller,he says it was a sparring session! BTW. Johnson sparred a further 6 rounds directly after the Smith spar 2 with Bob Armstrong,2 with Dave Mills and 2 with Joe Lanum, some tko!Lol "The story that GunBoat Smith knocked Johnson down on Sunday afternoon isa bit stretched,Johnson slipped on the canvas and the balance of the yarn was easy to concoct."The San Francisco Chronicle ,page 175 Jack Johnson by Pollack Smith also said the knockdown of Johnson by Ketchel was a fake. And that Johnson could have stopped Jeffries in the first round if he had wanted to. "it was no contest.Johnson would pick him up by the arms and set him anywhere he wanted and slap him down,Then they pulled a fake knockdown. This Ketchel was supposed to be a great hitter. He hit him on the top of the head and Johnson ,who was a good actor went down.He got up and hit Ketchel a punch in the jaw knocked him out that same round" Smith ,talking in his 1970 interview. In his two volume bio of Johnson Pollack includes his exhibitions, Smith does not feature in them! Pollack also includes several newspaper reports of the Smith "knockdown" and notes that several local papers who had reporters there made no mention of it,others said Johnson slipped on the canvas. The papers that played the incident up were out of town ones that relied on AP reports. A liar has been exposed once again, I look forward to the next time I show you up for the lying, bigoted moron you are!
The reports of the Corbett v Fitzsimmons fight state Corbett , despite bloodying Fitz nose and mouth could not deter him from attacking because he lacked power.Sullivan sitting ringside described Corbett's punches as," love taps",and ,after the fight Fitz was dismissive of Jim's punches.
He was certainly not a puncher, I just think the extent he was featherfisted gets overstated. He did seem able to put in a bit of sting in his shots when he wanted, though far from a devastating puncher, but tended not punch as hard. Creedon suggested it was because of hand problems which I think makes sense.
Corbett was always on his toes,I have no doubt that, if he had planted his feet, his punching power would have been significantly increased.
Actually Fitz himself said Corbett had a stuff punch. I'll take his word as Corbett floored him and it looks like a bit of a long count to me. If you watch Fitz vs Corbett the you'll see Corbett had lighting speed, and some power behind his blows.
Shut up already. So the Ketchel fight was a fake you say? Not! Ketchel took a lot of punishment and Joshnon was hurt and dazed according to ringside reports you maggot! It looks a lot like the Burns fight, was that fake too? Which other fights of Johnson's were fixed? Don't say Willard, that's laughable. Everyone knows GB Smith knocked Johnson silly in a 4 round ex match. I don't; care if it wasn't an official match, I think what happened is a revelation. Johnson was in his prime, Smith a raw novice. There is nothing wrong with a wire report. If you quote Heller book, which has some errors in it, " And he never forgot it " Smith on that punch that floored Johnson. Why didn't Smith get a title shot? duck, duck, duck...! And where is the purse you claimed to know vs. Johnson and Johnson. You're a bald-faced liar.
Sparring can be everything across the spectrum including at times top action fighting, but usually your working on things and often there not really down yet including top condition. Sometimes its slipping or hitting when you do, ducking, hardening the arm just before it lands, the whole array of what boxers work on, thats sparring and its not for beating the partner.
Fitz broke Jeffries nose and cut him to bits in their second fight.Corbett never set himself to punch with his full weight ,he was always moving. I don't say he was a powder puff puncher although that is how Sullivan decribed him after witnessing Fitz walk though his punches ,but he was never a banger.
Here is what Fitz said about Corbett's power. "While he was tugging at me in the clinches and trying to hammer away at my bodyI was winking at my trainers and my Wife.I knew he couldn't do any damage.I don't think anything more of his hitting power than I did before." "Corbett's hits did not have anything back of them, and I frequently let him hit me so that I could get back with some good ones." Fitzsimmons the day after the fight ,source Adam Pollack" Bob Fitzsimmons" page388 & 399. "Corbett was unmarked and able to Fitz almost at will, but his blows had little effect on the tough and durable Fitz. " The Examiner's next day fight report. Sullivan felt that Corbett," could have kept away and done a little better, but he never cold have won",He derisively called Corbett's punches "love taps". Bob Fitzsimmons page 393. Corbett did not work well at all.He is recorded to have hit Fitz194 times and yet the only mark that the latter had when the fight was over was a split lip. That might occur to anyone in the best of condition by a very light blow" When Corbett tried a hook instead of having his arm crooked properly, he would have it at full length and swing in.There was no steam in those blows Corbett kept away. Many many times he would punch straight at Fitzsimmons but a long way off and with his hand half open .When the blow got to Fitzsimmons head ,his hand would be open and it would barely reach"Reddy Galagher, fighter, sparring partner and trainer, writing in the Rocky Mountain News March 20th1897, same book pages 397& 398. * Fitz knocked out one of Corbett's gold teeth and wrenched his right thumb in the first round.Same book. Those are the facts and I've given my sources for them. Where are yours?Lol!
