A quote I found from Jeffries; 'I'm a little superstitious, and I'm willing to attribute a good part of my success to a lucky piece with a history, for which I wouldn't take a million dollars. This lucky piece is a silver watch which Billy Brady gave me. Corbett had it in his corner when he fought Sullivan and won from him the championship of the world. He thought enough of it and its winning properties to have it again placed in his corner when he met and defeated Charley Mitchell, but when it came to his fight with Fitzsimmons the silver watch was not there, and he lost. If the championship goes with this watch it will be a long time before it leaves me.' The Boston Globe - 10th June 1899
I wonder what happened to Corbett's lucky silver watch by the time of the Fitzsimmon's fight. Any possibility that Corbett pawned the watch to buy the thong especially for the Ruby Robert match - with Brady buying the watch after the fact of Jim defaulting on his loan? Such mysteries when delving deep into the Old Timers.
