The corner quit, not the fighter so I do see your point. On the other hand a lot could happen with only seconds left and it did not look good for Wood.
Boxercise Ben let his emotions get the better of him. When there’s literally just 10 seconds to go in the round, you let the fight go on so your fighter can get the minute’s rest in the corner, then if he’s really in terrible shape then you can stop him from coming out for the next round. Asinine decision especially considering Wood was up on the scorecards for this fight, and he suffered far worse punishment against Conlan in his last fight. Ben Davison is a terrible trainer for a world-level fighter, Wood needs to drop him if he’s going to take the Lara rematch.
Ben could have stopped it sooner …. Even the ref was dragging things out to give Wood time to recover…. Lara was tapping the ref on the back to get out the way…. Ben was going to chuck in the towel then hesitated… then When’s their only 10 secs left he missed his chance to steal the lime light…. So chucked it in any way … Ben is a clown who hides behind a nice guy persona
I am not a fan of Davidson but I find it difficult to quibble about this stoppage as Wood was done and Lara is a dangerous puncher on the scent for blood.
There are no hard and fast rules for a corner throwing in the towel. It doesn't matter how long is left in a round, the number of knockdowns or the number of dollars you would have won had the fighter survived. The corner has to make an objective decision prioritising their fighter's safety. In this fight, Lara is considered a big puncher, he had landed a decent shot before the KD punch but that could be classified as a classic one punch KO, the kind you watch as a compilation on YouTube. Leigh's legs were stiff and he was initially was unable to lift his body off the ground. These are the classic KO symptoms from which few can beat the count. Leigh got up and stumbled, that is another classic KO symptom. The ref didn't get much of a response from Leigh and I've seen many similsr situations where the ref puts his arms around the fighter and waves it off. In this situation there was a chance Leigh makes it to the bell, however from a risk perspective, the likely outcome was him taking a massive unprotected shot and being koed, or even worse, suffering another round or two of life shortening punishment. At that point, he was 100 to 1 to make the end of the fight, and more importantly, he was in grave danger. That was a perfect stoppage, similar to Yarde Beterbiev. Good job by the corner.
"When the towel came in Wood was about to fall over", wft. You dreamt that, man. Go and rewatch what really happened. That towel was a complete **** up by his corner. There's no excuse to **** up like that in a world title match. No excuse at all.
nah, that's not like that. It took a short moment for Wood to realize that that idiot threw the towel because he was staring at lara, ready to start fighting. He was not looking at the referee, so it took a short moment. The same happened with lara. Had lara the brain fried too? Nah. That was a total **** up. I won't say "fire this idiot", but this idiot should not complain if he gets fired after ****ing up like this in a world championship match.
