He's exaggerating to cover Wlad imo. Corrie had 191 amateur bouts, had been boxing since he was young (introduced by his uncle) and had 46 pro fights boxing until he was 42, despite making a lot of money against K2 by 38. No one who "hates" boxing does that. I don't think he naturally had very good stamina; he never had a semi-significant KO win after 7.5 mins and he was apparently an excellent sprinter as a youth, running 100M in 10.9 seconds. Wlad also didn't think Sanders just "caught lightning in a bottle" or he'd have rematched him, Corrie said Wlad never sent an offer for a rematch and I believe him.
I was at the Sander/Vitali fight. Disappointed he came in out of shape. He was really trying to land the counter left, but Vit was a little to quick to catch that night.
I watched it back the other night. Corrie hurt him in the 1st and caught him in the 3rd but after that it was one-way traffic.
Good topic. Sanders, while with some differences (and I don't mean racial), reminds me of Shavers. Corrie came along a generation later, was a bigger HW, and a lefty. Both generated excitement in the ring as they could take out almost any opponent - or be stopped themselves. Both had limited punch resistance and stamina. I believe Sanders could have had a better career if he trained to max efficiency. Hated or disliked boxing is an exaggeration, although he likely loved golf more. Maybe M Jordan loved golf & baseball as much as hoops, but we all know what sport he excelled at. Sanders reached greater heights as a boxer than a golfer. Blasting out even pre prime Wlad and stunning Vitali early exceeded anything he did in golf. Sanders vs. Shavers would be a helluva bout, for as long as it lasted. I'd take Sanders in an early to mid rounds T/KO.
Arguably the most dangerous HW southpaw in history at his best To actually hurt Vitali and get him on his bicycle… Enough said!
