Can anyone name a fighter Sanders size ( 6'4" ) that had both faster hands and better power? Can anyone name a heavyweight boxer who was a more accomplished athlete post-World War II? Sanders was a 100-meter sprinter, had a spot ( But declined ) on the South African World Cup Rugby team that won the championship, had a 120 mile an hour serve in tennis, and could out-drive Tiger Woods in golf.
He really was an amazing athlete all around and one to be admired. I enjoy watching youtube clips of his prospect fights from the early 90's which feature a very talented, skilled and athletic young hopeful unlike the deconditioned boxer we saw in his later years. Shame that most people who have never seen these early fights view him as perpetually being the latter.
If Sanders was born in the USA or the UK, he'd be a huge attraction. On Tommy Morrison's or Frank Bruno's level, maybe even bigger. But he fought in a time when there was no internet as we know it, and you had to have cable to see him on the heavyweight explosion series. Stuck with a 3rd rate trainer, and a 2nd rate promoter who lacked the fund or political ties to secure a big match, he was an all time could have been.
Agreed. And I'm going to get chased out of here for saying this, but under the right circumstances he might have been one of the very best heavys of all time.
Under different circumstances, So could've Morriston, Douglas, Tyson.. And many others. Doza only made this thread cos Sanders pasted Wlad in two.
I'm sure of it. He was offered a spot on the team that won the world cup. Here's what I found: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/corrie-sanders-heavyweight-world-champion-8175893.html
Can these claims be verified somehow ? I'll be very very surprised if the rugby thing is true. Rugby (RU) is a full-time sport. South Africa is one of the world's leading rugby nations. You don't get offered a spot on that team without being full-time involved in top-level Rugby. I know very little about golf, but are drive distances accurately verified and measured ? Is there anything official here ?
Tyson already achieved greatness with all things being as they were. So mentioning him is moot. Morrison had the proper foundation that a prize fighter with potential should have and did almost nothing with it.. Douglas was about the only one of those that I'll agree with but at no point was he the athlete Sanders was.
You have already embarrassed yourself by saying Wilder had faster hands AND better power. Morrison and Tyson received plenty of attention in the USA. Morrison had the Bill Clayton backing him as did Tyson. Tyson grew up with Cus'Damato as his father / trainer and then Kevin Rooney. If either man was born in South Africa with Sanders unknown trainer and Cedric Kushner as the promoter, they would have a tough time breaking out internationally too. As usual, what you don't know about boxing can fill an ocean. Kindly refrain from spoiling yet another thread, or post something with verifiable data that backs you up. If you have relevant information, I'll say so.
SA were banned from international rugby when that article mentions him playing in 1986/87. SA won the RWC in 1995 & 2007, when Corrie would be 29 or 41 Seems ridiculous but maybe you are right
And shielded his daughter from a bullet that killed him. One of the sport's best athletes and human beings.
This is more like it : Ja, I have always enjoyed my rugby and I like to think I was a decent flyhalf and centre, he laughed. I was invited for the Northern Transvaal trials at one stage, but my boxing was starting to take off. Rugby was still amateur, and I knew that I could make a career as a boxer, he added. From his own mouth. So he was invited to try out for Northern Transvaal. That's a far cry from being offered a place in the South African World Cup winning team. It has been reported that he was offered a spot on the national team. I''m sure of it. What's it to you?
