Surprised this hasn't been done. (I checked, and it hasn't - on here or any forum) Two very tall and rangy boxer-punchers from English-speaking countries in the southern hemisphere with square jaws and faces resembling the Marine from Doom, and reputations for being good enough to hang with elites at their best when properly motivated and trained but who never quite notched the right victories at the right times in order to entrench themselves as elites. Both averaged 230ish lbs in their careers and fought past the age of forty, and were regarded by most as fringe contenders who could have been more if they were more active, more committed to boxing, and luckier with opportunities & decisions. Their records are eerily similar, even. Sanders finished 42-4 (31), all four losses by stoppage. Meehan is 42-6 (32), with four losses by stoppage but has fought on a couple of years deeper into his forties than did Sanders. The Sniper was usually the longer man in the ring but would actually be disadvantaged with Meehan, giving up an inch of height and four in reach. Sanders is more athletic with greater hand speed and perhaps the bigger punch, but Meehan is a bit tougher. :bbb
Sanders by KO in 1-3. Sanders gassed very quickly and thus had only 1 KO after 3rd round. But early on he was very, very dangerous. And Meehan is a slow starter.
So nobody cares that Meehan should've been given the nod over Brewster (meaning he matches Sanders' single brief WBO title reign status) or that he was nearly as competitive with a much better version of Rahman, by whom both were stopped?
Actually just read there were some whisperings of them meeting about 8 years ago. Sanders was probably far gone enough to give Meehan a decent chance.
Great thread IB. Meehan was pretty underrated, he had good skills and was pretty tough and hard to take out most of the time. I favor Sanders heavily especially when he was serious, but Meehan definitely would have a real chance if he caught Corrie on a bad night, especially the longer the fight went on as he had the far better stamina and was a little tougher. However more often than not I think the 'sniper' wins an early rd shoot out.
Corrie Sanders, AKA the GOAT HW southpaw and one of the greatest natural talents the sport has ever seen and maybe THE greatest underachiever in boxing ever, would easily dismantle that nobody
Maybe earlier than that actually..... Considering how Machimana dealt with him. But Corrie looked grossly out of shape in that one, if a fight with Meehan came to fruition he may taken it more seriously and had a better showing.
