Just curious—which boxers had bad balance, in your opinion? Marciano punched himself out of balance quite a bit in some fights—falling in with his punches pretty severely. Probably did so more often and more conspicuously than any other world class fighter I can think of.
Yeah, I really wish these guys would just drop this ridiculous farce of pretending that Don Turner is a serious commentator whose opinions must be given as much weight as anyone else’s. It’s so transparently disingenuous.
Did Marciano hit guys more time than they hit them? If the answer is yes then he had great balance. Landing blows requires a great deal of balancing. And rocky landed an enormous number of blows against the highest possible level of opponents.
It was you who first introduced Manny Steward as some kind of trump card!! I will promise to never mention the Don ever again unless you mention only the negative part of Stewards view on Marciano. Is that’s fair?
Marciano threw an enormous quantity of punches, many of them missed and some by feet ,his great ace in the hole was he was in such terrific condition he could maintain that level of punching round after round.Throw that amount of volume, some have to get through its like saturation bombing! Chok, you are spouting nonsense.
I don't need Steward's opinion I can see Marciano and appreciate both his plusses and minuses. If Turner had said Marciano was clumsy , and he was overated because he was a white fighter ,you would be leading the charge to call him a ****!
The man who was KO'd in 2 rounds by Nate Tubbs...against one of the all time great warriors...yeah,...OK...next!!!
I taker your point, but it would inevitably be countered by how many rounds does 177lbs Ted Lowry go with Sanders.BTW I haven't made a pick.
There is no such thing as nonsense in this kind of debate. You could say the same of anyone. Especially of yourself. Your definition of balance is defined in the traditional sense of traditional stance and movement. Rocky was absolutely shocking technically but surprisingly successful. But this has nothing to do with balance. It is not bad balance to miss a punch. He would wind up facing the wrong way sometimes but had a knack of turning back around and landing the next punch before his opponent could capitalise. Rocky could get hit whilst his punch was on its way and it wouldn’t knock him off target, which actually takes unusual balance. Mostly You see guys get hit whilst their own punch is mid flow but it knocks them off and after receiving the blow their own punch falls short.
All successful fighters have good balance. David Haye got away with not being terribly good boxer because he was extraordinarily pin point accurate. Once he lost that advantage he fell short. But it was more to do with losing that second that previously gave him an advantage. I don’t accept this business of successful fighters having poor balance. The definition of poor balance is a guy who can’t ride a bike. It just seems like lunacy saying a great fighter has poor balance. You can either distribute the weight from one foot to the other or you can’t.
I never said all fighters have good balance. I said all successful fighters have balance. You need it to land punches. name me one world class guy with bad balance in absolute terms. Over extended reaching comes from starting a punch at the wrong time. You always start a punch at the wrong time if the guy you are fighting is better than you. He’s one step ahead. Faster or cleverer. Or both. So you over reach and fall over. But you wouldn’t over reach if the guy you fight is as good as you. Movements of Fighters of the same level Mary together better. Having bad balance is more to do with being able to ride a bicycle.
He pushed between one foot and the other as functionally as any other HW swarmer. Not exceptional for an elite fighter but good enough that he was pivoting through an awful lot of punches.
