To be fair to Mendoza ,he himself picks Louis ,but played Devil's Advocate here, and his argument has some points to consider. The fact that Sanders is a South paw, quick handed and can hit with his left means that he must have an outside chance of,if not winning ,at least making it an interesting evening for the Bomber, but that high held chin looks in grave danger of meeting up with Louis's Meat Axe right sometime through the proceedings!

I can go allong with most of what you said up to this point.

I would argue that Louis's record shows him to be one of the most failsafe ATGs at heavyweight. Consider that he fought 30+ ranked contenders so that is a lot of chances for sombody to square the circle and pull the upset.

Whatever you make of his chin, nobody managed to gain any advantage from it. At worst it wasnt bad enough to save you.

When everything was going arse over tits his finishing skills always bailed him out.

Finaly it should be noted that the only fighters who beat him at any stage of his career were fighters who won the lineal heavyweight champion outside of their fights with Louis. How many ATGs can you say that about?

You do have a point. He exposed himself for tthe upset enough times, but it rarely happened. That's black on white for you.

This is just a waste of a thread.

Only a spastic would pick Sanders over Louis.

I supposse that's me. I said Foreman is the ATG (Wlad excluded) I would give Sanders the best chance against. Sanders' straight left would spell trouble for anyone it can land cleanly on and Foreman is hands down the ATG with the worst defence. He came in straight backed, no head movement and poor guard, and you don't want to that when you meet a guy with longer reach and a very dangerous straight left.

And before you start out about Foreman's super chin, remember that Lyle almost KO'd him and he had no punch as hard as Sanders' left.

I guess you are stretching a point to say that "nothing is a given in the heavyweight division".

To be fair there are far too many certainties and formulaic predictions on this site.

I also feel that Sanders is the kind of fighter that kan spring upsets. A guy with a punch like that always can. He kind of epitomizes a HW in that sense. Shavers was also a limited fighter, with suspect chin and stamina, but he was close to scoring what would have been two of the very best KO's in HW history.

If thats the case, then why did he fail to beat one man rated in the Ring Magazina top 10 during the 1990s? Also why did he never managae to break the Ring Magazine top 10 in the 1990s? because he was not a world class fighter.

If thats the case, then how come no one in his 25 title defenses managed to upset him? Lennox lewis TWICE got upset with 1 punch in his around 12 title defenses.

And Sanders had trouble with anyone who was a good fighter. Look what Nate Tubbs, a journeyman, did to Sanders.

Nate Tubbs and Hasim Rahman, both far inferior fighters to Joe Louis, didnt seem to worry too much about it.

I find it funny how Mendoza, who picks Louis to win this matchup, is STILL argueing for Corrie Sanders. I have never seen so much defense for a fighter whom you picked to lose in this very matchup.

A one hit wonder Journeyman of the 1990s vs ATG 12 year reigning World Heavyweight Champion

    This is a no brainer

That is because I am objective on Louis in the ring. You really don't disagree with with the films or news read on Louis struggles. The talent pool at heavy was on the low side when Louis was champ, and like you wrote, the color line was pretty much still in play. Yet he struggled a lot.

Sure he won, but that is because there were no skilled punchers that he fought. No Baer was not skilled. But Schmeling was, and So was Walcott. And they beat Louis. The other two best fighters Louis fought were Chalres and Marciano, and we know how those went down. Then we have Louis multiple knock downs vs smaller or less than skilled fighters. Sorry, he's vulnerable to any skilled and explosive puncher. While Ali and Holmes proved they could recover from bombs, Louis really did not and was far easier to out box.

While Lennox Lewis was Ko'd twice by big punchers too, I think he's a much better distance fighter, and far stronger on the inside. Lennox Lewis mops the floor with the Conn's, Goody's, Farr's, Galento's and others who in fact knocked Louis down, gave him black eyes, or floored him. If you disagree with the films, let me know which one and we will debate it.

Corrie Sanders main problem in the 1990's is he lacked the promotioal team to get him a big fight, or if you prefer a bogus alphabet ranking to secure a big fight. This is because those in the business new he was a high risk low reward type of opponent.

I would pick Louis to win here, but I would make Sanders a live under dog.

M ,your post starts off ok ,but then goes down hill I'm afraid.
You pick out 4 fights to illustrate how Louis failed against skilled explosive punchers.
Schmeling. This fight can be explained Louis thought it was a foregone conclusion ,he had just destroyed Baer ,who in turn had kod Max,Louis thought all he had to do was turn up and trained accordingly.
In passing it might be mentioned that Louis closed the German's left eye with his jab ,and that it took Schmeling 12 rds of landing his ko right hand to finally put Louis down for the count.
Walcott. Louis was past his best and struggled to catch a slippery elusive counterpuncher, and he got the verdict . Walcott that night would have been hell for anyone.
Charles.Louis came out of retirement because he owed the IRS a fortune, he was competitive in most of the rounds and marked Charles up facially, but his reflexes were not there and he could not land his big shots any more.
Marciano.Louis, 36 , was over the hill and halfway up the otherside when he fought Rocky, enough said.
You picked 3 of Louis's fights when he was at the tail end of is career, I dont think that is being objective as you state.
Louis lost to 3 men in 70 fights ,all world Champions.

You say Lennox Lewis mops the floor with the Conn's Goody's?[do you mean Godoy],Farr's ,Galento's and others ,who in fact knocked Louis down.
Neither Farr,Godoy,or Conn floored Louis.Louis was on the floor a lot but only kod twice, both times by very hard punching world Champions, and after a steady bombardment of punches.
"Louis is vulnerable to any skilled explosive puncher"?
Can you think of a fighter who isnt?

Good point. It seems that Sanders would make a horrific stylistic matchup with Foreman for the Texas strongman.
